Dans les années 1830, Nièpce trouve le procédé pour fixer sur des plaques d'étain des images. En 1833 Louis Daguerre et François Arago prolongent ses recherches à son décès et inventent le daguerréotype qui imprime une image sur une plaque d'argent exposée à la lumière. La photographie est née.

Le portrait en noir et blanc va devenir le pilier de l'industrie photographique du Second Empire et rendrait presque la peinture de portraits désuète. Des objectifs à distance focale plus courte et permettant des temps de pose réduits sont commercialisés. Cependant le matériel nécessaire reste coûteux et difficile à apprivoiser. Certains photographes décident donc d'ouvrir leur atelier de photographie, on les appellera les daguerréotypistes. Le daguerréotype est capricieux et les photographes professionnels doivent procéder à la prise d'image avec beaucoup de minutie pour faire leur mise au point. Ils reçoivent de nombreuses personnes dans leurs studio et proposent pratiquement un catalogue de poses notamment pour les portraits d'enfants très populaires auprès des familles aisées. D'abord fréquentés par la bourgeoisie, la baisse des prix qui suit la multiplication des ateliers attire une clientèle plus large. Ce phénomène a d'ailleurs le don d'exaspérer le poète maudit Charles Baudelaire, agacé par le narcissisme provoqué par les daguerréotypistes.

Malgré ses protestations, la tendance à l'égotisme ne va faire que de s'accroître avec l'apparition des « portraits carte de visite ». En 1858, Adolphe Eugène Disdéri propose de produire des portraits en guise de carte de visite comme peuvent exister aujourd'hui les photos d'identité: il y a alors un seul tirage sur lequel figurent huit portraits, où le modèle se met en situation (un peu comme une pellicule de photomaton). Très appréciés par la bourgeoisie, ils mettent en valeur la situation sociale des modèles et doivent rendre compte de leur condition. Des portraits carte de visite de célébrités sont même vendus aux clients qui pourront par la suite les intégrer à leurs photos de famille. Le photographe Nadar sera l'un des premiers à faire preuve d'une véritable démarche artistique dans la réalisation de ses portraits. Il va mettre l'accent sur les expressions et sur le confort du modèle en prenant le temps de le mettre à l'aise avant de lui tirer le portrait. Il photographie ainsi les intellectuels et les artistes de l'époque comme Honoré de Balzac, George Sand, Victor Hugo, il réussit même immortaliser Baudelaire et à le réconcilier ainsi avec le portrait en studio.

À la fin du 19ème siècle, la pratique de la photographie se démocratise avec la multiplication des procédés à l'arrivée de l'entreprise Kodak. L'usage de l'appareil photo est plus quotidien et l'art du portrait aussi. Un siècle plus tard, c'est l'invention de l'appareil photo numérique qui bouleverse les codes. Alors qu'avant, les modifications pour altérer les photographies ne pouvaient s'opérer que lors de la prise de vue, du cadrage ou lors du développement des clichés, avec le numérique, la retouche devient plus accessible, plus facile et plus rapide. La photographie numérique autorise plus de détournements et le nombre de possibilités pour faire des photos explose.

De nombreux photographes ont marqué l'histoire de ce genre artistique. On peut notamment citer Cindy Sherman, qui excelle en auto-portraits, Annie Leibovitz qui immortalise les célébrités dans des poses dramatiques à l'argentique, le duo déjanté Pierre et Gilles ou bien encore Diane Arbus, Irving Penn qui a su capter la sensibilité de chacun de ses sujets, Richard Avedon sublimant les stars des années 60, Helmut Newton et ses séances photo controversées, Bettina Rheims célèbre pour ses uniques portraits.
