Beech – Hand-braided Wire Tree Sculpture
Beech is an expansive, hand-braided wire sculpture by Hungarian artist Zsuzsanna Györgyövics, measuring 140 x 190 x 10 cm. This large-scale wall-mounted piece is inspired by the majestic presence of beech trees and created entirely by hand using traditional wire-twisting techniques. Its sweeping canopy, finely branched silhouette, and delicately woven roots transform metal into movement, offering a profound meditation on the life force of nature.
The sculpture's uniqueness lies in the precision and density of its wirework. Over hundreds of meters of wire are intricately braided to form this composition — no element is prefabricated or mass-produced. The artist sculpts each detail manually, giving rise to a work that is both technically extraordinary and emotionally resonant. The organic form appears almost weightless against the wall, while the coppery and dark iron tones blend subtly, enhancing its visual richness. Shadows cast by the artwork change throughout the day, lending a sense of quiet animation to the piece.
Beech offers more than visual beauty — it is a symbolic expression of rootedness, growth, and transformation. It suits minimalist, nature-inspired, or contemplative interiors and can anchor both residential and institutional spaces. As part of a limited body of work that celebrates the relationship between humanity and the natural world, Beech is a sculptural statement that invites stillness, awe, and reflection.
Born in Budapest in 1969 and raised in a small village surrounded by forests and biodiversity, Zsuzsanna developed an intimate relationship with the natural world from an early age. Trees, ever-present in her childhood, became the core of her artistic practice: “a source of life," as she describes — offering protection, sustenance, emotion, and transformation.
Now based in Hungary, she sculpts trees from wire, using a meticulous and unmistakable technique. What began as small pieces evolved into large-scale works that can reach up to 2.5 meters in width and contain over 850 meters of hand-twisted iron wire. Each piece is built with almost meditative precision, where time and gesture are inseparable from the final form.
“The tree is the purest metaphor for existence: it changes, it dies, it is reborn. Just like us."
Through her three-dimensional and wall-mounted compositions, Zsuzsanna explores the cycle of seasons, the rhythms of nature, and their parallels with the human experience. Her sculptures evoke not only the physical presence of trees, but also their silent soul — roots that stretch into memory, trunks that hold stories, branches that reach toward the future.
