This figure, inspired by Edmund Wilson's quote, “No two people ever read the same book," is a profound reflection on subjectivity and individual interpretation in reading. Through these words, Wilson invites us to consider that, even though two people may have the same text in their hands, the experience and meaning they derive from it are profoundly different. This difference is not only due to variations in the physical content of the book, but more importantly, to the different perspectives and contexts that readers bring to the act of reading.
Subjective interpretation
Each reader approaches a text with a unique set of experiences, emotions, prior knowledge, and beliefs. These variables affect how themes, characters, dialogues, or even writing style are perceived. The same passage can evoke different reactions or meanings depending on the reader's life, cultural background, or emotional state at the time of reading. Thus, what may be a moving love story for one person may be a sad or frustrating tale for another, depending on their own experiences.
The role of personal context
The social and cultural context of each reader also influences how they understand a book. Two people living in different historical, geographical, or cultural contexts will interpret references and symbolism differently. A text written at a particular moment in history may resonate differently for someone living in that same context and for someone reading it from a distant perspective in time.
The dynamics of reading
Reading is not a passive act; it is an active process of interaction between the text and the reader. Each reader selects what interests them, interprets what they perceive, and sometimes even fills in the gaps in the text with their own imagination or emotions. Thus, the book itself is not something fixed; it becomes something that changes and transforms the moment it is read. This process of co-creation between the author and the reader means that, even though they share the same words, the experience is unique to each.
The evolution of reading over time
Furthermore, interpretations of the same book can change over time in a person's life. A book read in youth may be perceived in one way, while read years later, with greater experience or maturity, it may have a completely different meaning. Literary works can have layers and levels of reading that are revealed differently as the reader changes.
The influence of prior knowledge
Readers with different levels of knowledge about a specific topic may experience a book differently. A literary text laden with historical or philosophical references will be read differently by someone with training in those fields than by someone without that background. In this sense, the “same book" is not the same in terms of content enriched by each reader's prior knowledge.
The universality and particularity of reading
Finally, what Wilson seems to suggest with this quote is that reading is a bridge between the world of the author and the world of the reader, but that bridge is traversed differently by each person. Although a literary work may seem universal in its message or themes, each individual experiences it in a unique way. This plurality of interpretations not only enriches the reading experience, but also highlights literature's ability to connect people, regardless of their differences.
