Arturo Carmassi nasce a Lucca nel 1925 e nel 1930 segue la famiglia a Torino dove studia (segue i corsi della "Scuola del paesaggio Fontanesi" e dell'Accademia Albertina) e lavora fino al 1952. Dopo aver viaggiato in Europa e lavorato per qualche tempo a Parigi, si trasferisce a Milano dove stringe rapporti con Gino Ghiringhelli, proprietario della galleria "Il Milione"che diventa il suo mercante e nel 1956 prende lo studio in via Andegari. L'anno seguente le sue opere si affermano in mostre importanti all'estero: al Brooklyn Museum di New York, alla Biennale di Scultura di Anversa e alla "Junge Italianischen Plastik" di Darmstadt e di Dusseldorf. Alla metà degli anni Cinquanta Carmassi sviluppa un forte interesse per la scultura e nel decennio che va dal '55 al '65 la sua attività di scultore prende sempre più spazio, tanto da stabilirsi in Liguria, a Bocca di Magra, dove allestisce un grande studio di scultura dando vita ad opere di grandi dimensioni, che tre anni dopo lo vedranno protagonista con una sala personale alla Biennale di Venezia. Nel '66 Carmassi compie un viaggio in Bretagna. In questo periodo abbandona Milano per ritirarsi nella campagna toscana, a Torre di Fucecchio, fra Firenze, Pisa e Lucca, dove vive fino al 2015, anno della sua morte. Dalla seconda metà degli anni '70, si dedica soprattutto alla litografia e calcografia e viene chiamato ad esporre e presenziare ad incontri di cultura in musei ed istituzioni in Europa e negli Stati Uniti. Dagli anni '50 partecipa a numerose mostre personali e collettive, tra cui: "I Premio Nazionale di Pittura 'Golfo di La Spezia'" (1950); "Biennale Internazionale d'Arte" a Venezia (1952; '54); Musei d'Arte Moderna di Parigi, Bruxelles, Roma e Spagna (1955); Carnegie Institute, Pittsburg (1956); Brooklyn Museum, New York (1957); "Junge Italianischen Plastik", Darmstadt e Düsseldorf (1958); "Biennale" di Amsterdam (1958); Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago (1960); Johannesburg (1960); "The New Generation in Italian Art", Dallas, San Francisco, New York (1960); Palazzo dei Diamanti e Castello Estense, Ferrara (1962); "Triennale Internationale de Gravure sur Bois", Germania, Svizzera, Brasile (1975-'76; '79); Museo Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, Tokyo e Kyoto (1976); "Museo Immaginario di Carmassi", Accademia di Francia, Roma (1986); Galleria Il Ponte, Firenze (personale, 1992; '94); Palazzo Primavera, Terni (2005); CAMEC, La Spezia (2008). A partire dal 1958 è documentata la sua presenza nella zona apuo-versiliese presso i Laboratori Angeli, Studio Sem e le Fonderie Da Prato e Fratelli Lucarini a Pietrasanta, e a Carrara presso gli Studi Nicoli ed Elle Marmi. Qui prende parte anche ad alcune mostre, tra cui: "Scultori e artigiani in un centro storico", Pietrasanta (1977); "Mostra di scultura", Orto Botanico, Lucca (1979); "Marmo d'opera", Palazzo Mediceo, Seravezza (2006).
