Delve into the mesmerizing chaos of Vav Hakobyan's "Escape," a masterful oil on canvas that transcends traditional boundaries of art. This painting is a vivid testament to Hakobyan's signature style, which blends illustrative figuration with deconstructive abstraction to create a narrative that is both mysterious and compelling.
"Escape" features a complex tableau of figures and elements that seem to be in a state of dynamic and turbulent movement. Central to the scene is a figure in fire, who appears to be orchestrating or caught within a surreal, chaotic environment, underscored by bold swaths of color and enigmatic forms. Explosive reds and calming blues dominate the palette, creating a visual dichotomy that draws the viewer into a deeper contemplation of the scene.
The artwork captures a sense of motion and urgency, with elements that seem to float and collide in an undefined space, suggesting themes of conflict, freedom, and the unforeseen forces of life. Hakobyan's use of sharp contrasts and layered textures adds depth and intensity to the painting, making it a powerful statement piece.
Collector’s Guide
“Since 2017 my painting and working style had a drastic turnaround. I decided to refuse the building style of composition by which I was guided for years. I started paying less attention or completely eliminated from my painting the dogmas, which were preventing my imaginary free doings. I began not classifying my doings and not thinking about their sequence.
Balanced composition, symmetry, light position, prospect, history and even painting's balance of saturation stopped being interesting for me. I am interested in new forms, new figures, that don't have past and future, that don't exist in reality and have no history. They are discovered and seen move on the canvas or outside of it independently, depending on moment's influence not following my caprices.
I am interested in the change of forms, the transformation of figures, unpainted spaces on the canvas, incompatible diversity, the extremeness of contrasts. This is an endless process and as the painting's final look is not important to me, the efforts to make a painting on purpose make it meaningless.
Every new painting is a surprise for me. I became not interested in paintings themselves, I'm interested in painting them...
I want to see an explosion in my paintings, but I don't want them to be negative. I am happy with the expression of positive emotions in them, even if I don't present a positive theme. Sometimes it's interesting for me to find a comedic feature in tragedy and to emphasize it.
I want my works to be like my dreams, which I might have seen, but that have been wiped from my mind. That thought may seem a bit strange, but it may be a reflection of subconscious perception.
While painting the whole canvas, the figures appear and disappear as they change their places and colours and move across the canvas, in other words they change in their movements until they find their appropriate places.
While creating a new painting I always try to cover as little of the canvas as possible. I like the colour of canvas. Sometimes it happens that the painting is completed without covering the whole canvas, but sometimes it doesn't."
