Artwork location: France

This remarkable work of art, entitled "The Surrealist Observer", is a flamboyant example of the imaginative and offbeat approach specific to modern surrealism. Here the artist deploys a restricted but effective chromatic palette, dominated by hues of yellow, black and white, creating a striking contrast and a captivating visual harmony. The framework of this composition is a heterogeneous amalgam of odd geometric shapes and strange organic elements. This deployment of unstructured elements and their almost chaotic arrangement denotes a thoughtful depth and intentionality in the apparent disorder. The key figures in this work, equipped with omnipresent eyes, scan the space with an almost tangible acuity. These eyes, one of which is nestled in a figure reminiscent of a fish's head, symbolize the perpetual vigilance and continuous questioning of the viewer. The use of circular and rectangular shapes, nested and tangled, testifies to an ingenious fusion between visual disorientation and the quest for a center, enigmatic and elusive. The small golden spheres placed on the ground add a mythological dimension, evoking cosmic eggs, symbols of genesis and infinite potential. The composition is delineated by a dark blue background and a tiled floor, creating an illusion of depth and confining the elements in an ambiguous space between the real and the unreal. The lunar crescent, through its positioning, reinforces this otherworldly ambiance, half-illuminating the figures with a mysterious glow. “The Surrealist Observer" intrigues and fascinates with its ability to challenge conventional perceptions and immerse the viewer in a deep reflection on the condition of existence and the multiplicity of perspectives. A complex and rich work, it invites prolonged contemplation and total immersion in the dreamlike universe it offers.

Presentation

Skepa is a French painter and sculptor born in 1978. Co-founder of the BAFO movement.

He graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and began his first approach with graffiti painting in the early 90s.

His meeting with Jone Hopper, with whom he confuses the TBS group and other activists, is a turning point in his approach to art.

Over the years, his painting becomes more experimental, more raw and opens up to new frontiers. He draws his influences from Brauner, Matisse, Corneille, Braque and firefighter art.

Several art critics compare his pictorial production to a UFO with multiple tentacles harmoniously mixing organic Cubism embellished with a touch of unstructured Figurative art, breaking with the sanitized vision of contemporary art.

He is one of the most active artists on the online art market with a “dizzying" production of more than 1,200 works in all mediums.
