Artwork sold in perfect condition

Artwork location: France

In a fiery collision of light and darkness, this abstract composition explodes with striking chromatic intensity. Flaming orange dominates the pictorial space, crossed by clear lines that seem to split the surface like lightning in a twilight sky. This dialogue between movement and color creates a dynamic tension that immediately captivates the eye.

The spirited gestures evident in the application of the paint material reveal a spontaneous and visceral approach. The energetic brushstrokes, particularly in the black swirl that anchors the composition in its lower section, demonstrate a bodily choreography reminiscent of techniques developed by the American Abstract Expressionists of the 1950s. The varied texture—sometimes thick and impasto, sometimes fluid and transparent—enriches the visual experience by adding a tactile dimension to the work.

This painting is part of the tradition of European lyrical abstraction, while echoing Georges Mathieu's explorations of speed of execution and the liberation of gesture. The dramatic contrasts between incandescent zones and dark depths also evoke certain compositions by Pierre Soulages, although the fiery palette departs from his characteristic "outrenoir." It also reflects the tension between structure and chaos that characterizes the work of Franz Kline, with a much more vibrant color palette.

The delicate balance between control and abandon, between structure and spontaneity, gives this work a vibrant presence that transcends its materiality. It doesn't just represent movement, it embodies it—capturing the fleeting moment when creative energy crystallizes into form and color, an eloquent testament to the vitality of contemporary abstraction in our era of speed and constant transformation.

Jean Soyer, 060504
France  • 1937

Presentation

Jean Soyer is a French painter who was born in 1937. After studying the trades of engraving, lithographing and graphic designing at the École Estienne (Graduate School of Arts and Printing Industry), he built a carrier as a publicist.

The sight of a Nicolas de Staël's painting in 1987 made him conscious of an imperious need to transcribe his feelings into painting. He left the tracks of the master and accomplished himself into his own style of lyric abstraction with the influences of Georges Mathieu and Fabienne Verdier, which allowed himself from 1997 on to make his passion a profession.

His oil, knife and comb paintings are recognizable from their warm and intense colors, deep contrasts, calligraphic gestures, and dynamic compositions which seem to expand far beyond the canvas.

Since 2007, Jean Soyer presides over the Salon Violet, a contemporary art salon created in 1935 and which biennial expositions allow to turn the light on a large selection of artists.
