A silhouette stands, misty, almost sacred, at the center of controlled chaos. The work is born from a paradoxical gesture: painting by erasing, creating by removing, revealing the image by removing it from the world. This process, invented by the artist—although imbued with an unconscious collective memory—places randomness at the heart of the creative act. It is no longer the hand that imposes a figure; it is the material that accepts, or refuses, to open itself to a presence.
We see a hooded figure, as if emerging from another time, from a nebulous memory or a forgotten belief. It seems to float in an uncertain zone, between appearance and disappearance. Is it there? Are we projecting it? It stands at the edge of the visible, like a secret that we guess at without ever being able to reach it.
The background, swept with nervous black lines, recalls a night crossed by gusts of wind. It is an active void, an inhabited darkness. And at the heart of this tension, a gray light emerges, an almost spectral transparency. Chance, here, is not disorder: it is revelation. A form emerges, but never completely, as if the work itself doubted what it sees.
This painting asks: is the image already there, hidden in the material, or does it arise from withdrawal, from lack, from the gesture of erasure? The artist is no longer entirely a creator, but a medium. Chance becomes memory, memory becomes form, and form refuses to be named entirely.
This gouache work evokes silent tensions—between faith and forgetting, between presence and abstraction, between technique and letting go. It is a contemporary icon, without dogma, without a face, but full of whispers.
"Memories of Chance" is an invitation to look slowly. To remain in doubt. To accept that the truest image may be only a ghost.

Merljn is an artist who has taken a scientific approach to art, exploring the mixing of mediums, techniques, choice of medium and composition with deliberate intention. For him, beauty obeys laws, and the tools offered to artists form an obvious or undiscovered panel, requiring careful ordering.
His journey led him to unlearn to achieve authenticity, following the adage “know thyself". A spirit strongly opposed to constraint, boredom, mediocrity, lack of clarity about his work and the incomprehension of the spectator, he involuntarily followed in the footsteps of his predecessors. Rediscovering pointillism, naive painting, carbon copying, destructuring, science fiction or the imprecise approach, his main ideas have always been to take pleasure in what he does and to "rediscover the universe".
His progress was long and difficult. When a technique or way of representing had nothing more to offer and he did not find the exaltation he was looking for, it was up to the next one to move on. Being authentic also means renouncing what we dislike, especially if we had hopes of happiness there. Many times he wanted to stop everything.
Today, he thinks that his graphic art is not something that could occupy him every day from morning to evening. He is not looking for a technique that satiates him, but rather artistic variety. As in cooking, it is good to vary, not to be greedy, nor to die of hunger. Perhaps he is a wise artist.
He offered a lot of his works and, on principle, had never sold any. They are scattered all over the world, among the rich and the poor. Still others are used to fuel the barbecue fire. His opinion on the prices of his art is simple: if he needs money, he sells, otherwise, he offers. These are two facets of shared happiness.
His civil identity and details of his private life are not communicated. He sometimes tells by the fire that he once made a mistake in a spell, now finding himself stuck in St Tropez in a rejuvenated body, and that Arthur will know nothing about it. But that's another story...
