A mother and her daughter lived in a house built on top of a tall tree. One day, the mother decided to go fishing. Climbing down the long rope ladder, she shouted to her daughter, "I'm going fishing at the back reef, but if someone comes to get me, say I'm at the front reef." Shortly after, the dhogai (witch) of Ulalai Island appeared at the bottom of the tree. " Where is your mother ? she cried. Remembering her mother's advice, the daughter replied to the dhogai that her mother was fishing in the front reef. The dhogai therefore left for the front reef and searched in the bushes, without finding anyone. Shortly after, the mother returned with a large basket of fish. She climbed the rope ladder and, together with her daughter, cooked her catch for dinner. As they ate, they heard the voice of the dhogai who had come back hungry. " There is someone ? she asked. I'm hungry ! The mother threw a fish and some bush vegetables into the dhogai's mouth. She swallowed everything and went back to her cave. The next morning, the mother decided to go fishing again. She said to the girl, "I'll be at the front reef, but if the dhogai comes to pick me up, tell her I'm at the back reef." Shortly after, the dhogai appeared at the bottom of the tree. " Where is your mother ? she screamed. The girl replied that her mother fished at the back reef. The dhogai therefore went to look for the mother at the back reef, while the mother returned safe and sound with another large basket of fish. Shortly after, they heard the dhogai's angry voice: “Is anyone there? I'm hungry ! The mother tossed a fish and some bush vegetables into the dhogai's mouth, who swallowed it all and went back to her cave. The next day, the mother decided to return to fishing and therefore left her daughter with the same instructions. "I'll be at the back reef, but if the dhogai picks me up, tell her I'm at the fore reef." Of course, the doghai came back to ask where the mother was. This time, however, the girl was wrong and replied that her mother was back reef fishing. The dhogai went to the back reef and, through a bush, observed the mother fishing. Suddenly, she heard a noise behind her. Turning around, she saw the ugly dhogai starting to run down the beach to pick her up. The mother screamed and the dhogai chased her to the tree house. She tossed her basket of fish in the air so she could climb the rope ladder faster and be safe. She narrowly escaped the evil dhogai. The moment the mother began to scold her daughter for betraying her secret, the dhogai angrily yelled, “I'm hungry! This time the mother too was angry; so instead of throwing food at it, she threw a white-hot stone directly into the dhogai's open mouth. She screamed in pain and went back to her cave where she died slowly. It was a day of celebration because now the little children and their mothers can live in safety without fear of the dhogai of Ulalai Island.

Dennis Nona, Ulalai Dogai
Australia  • 1973

Presentation

Dennis Nona was born in 1973 on the Badu Island. He comes from the Torres Strait, from one of the two ?indigenous? communities in Australia (in the Northern part of the continent).

He is a print artist and a sculptor and, through his art, he tells the legends of his people. He is considered to be one of the best representatives of Australian printmaking. His favorite techniques are the linocut and the aquatint; he uses these techniques because he thinks the texture of the paper, the fabrication techniques and the ink and pigments give strength to the universe he creates.

Dennis Nona reinterprets the patterns of the traditional mask drawings that evoke the legends of the Torres Strait and of Papua New Guinea, so his artworks are veritable ?chanson de gestes?.

His works are unique combinations of traditional totemic representations that often have marine subjects (turtles, fish, lobsters), of invented shapes and characters that seem to come from Hieronymus Bosch?s paintings, and subtle arabesques as a background for these narratives.

Beyond its visual dimesion, the graphic work of Dennis Nona is a ?defense and illustration? of the culture of his native region.
