Presentation

Gregory Masurovsky was born in a black neighborhood in the Bronx, a month after the start of the Great Depression in the United States. Gregory Masurovsky studied at the Art Students League of New York. After several years in New York, Grégory Masurovsky moved to Paris in 1954, where he resided until his death.

He returned to the United States briefly and taught drawing at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design from 1966 to 1967 and at the American Center in Paris and other art schools in Europe from 1980 to 1987. He participated in the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles in 1969. Gregory Masurovsky also made several short films about his art.

Since 1957, Masurovsky has had numerous solo exhibitions, including in New York, Cleveland, Paris, Bern, Munich and Frankfurt am Main. In 1961, he won the Drawing Critic's Prize at the Paris Biennale and in 1963, he received the International Engraving Jury Prize at the following Paris Biennale. He received the William Copley Foundation Fellowship in 1963 and 1964 and had a comprehensive solo exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. In 1964 he took part in the documenta III in Kassel in the famous hand drawings section.

Grégory Masurovsky died on July 17, 2009 in Paris.

Gregory Masurovsky has been considered for many years as one of the leading artists of surrealist and fantastical drawing. His original engravings and lithographs are in the collections of many public galleries in America and Europe. The Museum of Modern Art in New York has one of the largest collections of original prints by Gregory Masurovsky.
