Frédéric Bruly Bouabré was born in 1923 in Zéprégühé, Republic of Côte d'Ivoire. This poet-draughtsman, creator, thinker but also encyclopaedist invented a specifically African script to save the culture of his Bété people from oblivion. His pictograms, drawn with a ballpoint pen or colored pencils on pieces of cardboard, transcribe tales and legends from his native region of Daloa, mythological stories or events of daily life. The transmission of knowledge is one of its priorities. A vision inspired the artist to create an alphabet specific to the Bété people, whose oral culture was in danger of dispersing over the years. His drawing is that of invented letters, but also faces and long-listened stories - poems, tales and legends passed down from generation to generation before being put on paper. "Knowledge of the World" includes thousands of drawings, a kind of encyclopedia of knowledge of the world. He has exhibited his work in Europe and the United States. Frédéric Bruly Bouabré alias Cheik Nadro (the one who never forgets) died on January 28, 2014 in Yopougon, a commune of Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire.

Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, Une scène d'adieux
Cote D'Ivoire  • 1923  - 2014

Presentation

Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, also known as Cheik Nadro (c. 1923 – 28 January 2014), was an Ivorian artist.

On March 11, 1948, he had a divine revelation, which influenced much of his later work. Frédéric Bruly Bouabré worked as a clerk in various government offices. He created hundreds of small drawings that depict many different subjects, mostly drawn from local folklore or describing his visions. The drawings are part of a larger body of work, World Knowledge.

Bouabré also created a 448-letter, universal Bété syllabary, which he used to transcribe the oral tradition of his people, the Bétés. His visual language is portrayed on some 1,000 small cards using ballpoint pens and crayons, with symbolic imagery surrounded by text, each carrying a unique divinatory message and comments on life and history.
