Artwork sold in perfect condition

Artwork location: Australia

The artwork presents a poignant black-and-white portrait of a young individual adorned in traditional attire, offering a compelling glimpse into cultural heritage and identity. The subject’s gaze, direct and unflinching, commands attention and evokes a profound sense of stoicism and dignity. Intricately styled hair, possibly with extensions or decorations, crowns the head with a sense of ritualistic elegance, intertwining artistry with tradition. The layered necklaces cascading around the neck suggest both ornamental and cultural significance, adding depth and narrative to the visual story. The high contrast of the monochromatic palette accentuates the textures and details—the smoothness of the skin, the intricacy of the headdress, and the contours of the facial features, creating an arresting tableau that invites the viewer to look deeper. The minimalist background focuses all attention on the subject, ensuring that every detail—from the intensity of the eyes to the delicate lines of the lips—emerges with clarity and impact. This image stands out not just for its aesthetic qualities but for its ability to convey a rich tapestry of history and personal identity through visual means. Each element, from the adornments to the subject's composed expression, speaks of a deep connection to tradition and a story that transcends the boundaries of time. This portrait is a masterful testament to the enduring strength and beauty found within cultural heritage, making it a timeless piece of art that resonates on multiple levels.

Presentation

Faie Davis’s career spans all things creative including photography, art direction, design, illustration, commercial film direction and writing.

Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Faie has won and judged creative awards all over the world and her work has been published in Germany, Australia and the Middle East. Faie is also the author/photographer of the acclaimed LOOKBOOK series featuring some of the world’s more unusual destinations and the indigenous peoples who live there. She is currently mounting a photographic expedition to the Sudan and Angola before returning to Namibia to complete her comprehensive photographic study of the Himba in Namibia, a project that has spanned over a decade.

Her previous career as one of Australia’s top advertising creative directors, started in the theatre, painting and creating sets and costumes for designers of the Australian Opera and Ballet Companies including Sir Sidney Nolan.

Her sojourn into advertising saw her headquartered in Asia where she famously co-created the ‘Singapore Girl’ campaign, the only advertising icon to be immortalized in London’s Madame Tussauds waxworks museum.

Her career in this field took her all over the world working with some of the industry’s greatest photographers until she returned to Australia to set up her own highly creative, boutique Agency. Here she created strategies and campaigns for world renowned clients including Louis Vuitton, Oroton, Sheridan, Georg Jensen, Ella Baché, The Ritz Carlton Hotels Group, Harpers Bazaar and many others.

When she is not traveling the world photographing and living with indigenous tribes on the African continent, she works out of her premises on the harbour in Sydney, Australia.
