Hegemon Chaignon is a French artist who photographs fragments of life, memories halfway between reality and dream.
He creates timeless, universal images which belong to everyone and which act as raw materials and which end up bringing our own images, our own memories, our own dreams to the surface from the depths of our memories.

His recent work mixes video and pinhole to recreate these vaporous images with few details, between blur and sharpness, between photo and painting that come to life in video when viewed with an augmented reality app on a smartphone.

The pinhole is a very simple camera that allows you to obtain an image by letting light pass through a tiny hole that serves as a lens.

This technique, also called "camera obscura" (dark room) was invented in Persia around the year 1000, then widely used by painters, especially from the Renaissance.
In 1514, Leonardo da Vinci explained: “By letting the images of illuminated objects enter through a small hole in a very dark room you will then intercept these images on a white sheet placed in this room. [...] but they will be smaller and reversed. »

In a way, combining a pinhole and a digital camera is a pure anachronism.
This historical paradox makes it possible to bring photography closer to painting by obtaining the very particular rendering of a technically sharp photo with fewer details, less sharpness, skies and skins that seem to have been painted with a brush.

Hégémon Chaignon's work has been exhibited at Arles photo meetings, in Mougins, in many art galleries, he has also been nominated for the HSBC prize for contemporary photography.

Imagine it at home

Hégémon (Hedge) Chaignon, Sainte Barbe - Mother and son

Hedge is a photographer born in 1973 in France. He lives and works in Paris. After his engineering studies, he studied film, wishing to go beyond photography by producing videos.

When he was 12, he found a camera in the street and realized he wanted to take pictures. He was feeling the need to “freeze" time: he made his apprenticeship by photographing the façades, the prospects and urban vanishing points.

He also received his artistic training at the "school" of the street and in museums, was inspired by architecture, westerns and cinematic frames. He was influenced by the style of photographers such as Sebastio Salgado, Joseph Koudelka, Doisneau, Henri Cartier Bresson, Capa, Weegee, Stephen Shore, or of painters such as Gustave Caillebotte or Edward Hooper.
