"The artist sets out in search of the voices of past artists, the vast frescoes and great fables; the gigantic aspiration to Art. He turns to the mountains of figuration, from the Gothic to the Baroque, from the Enlightenment to Romanticism. Through photography he reclaims their forbidden territories, the realms of the strange and deformed, the sublime and the terrifying; he recovers the ineffable, disturbing, extraordinary & repellent beauty that leads from Bosch, Boticelli, Velasquez and Goya to Moreau, Redon, Picasso and Kubin. He portrays the world of the present like a museum collection, a labyrinthine chaos registering the mad accumulation of things and acts, people and events." (Aasim Akhtar - The Friday Times, Vol. XXIII No. 42)

Dominic Rouse, Reasons for attendance
United Kingdom  • 1959

Presentation

Born in 1959, Dominic Rouse is an English photographer. He started his career as a photojournalist in 1976 at the age of 16. He opened his first commercial studio in 1986 and ten years later bought a computer and started working on more personal art projects. His singular vision and his mastery of techniques distinguish him from many other photographers who use the computer in their practice.

Dominic Rouse is a visionary in the artistic sense of the term and his work has probably more in common with painting than with photography. His work may seem anchored in the past, but it is the product of a combination of the lastest digital techonologies and the timeless qualities of big format photography resulting in dark silver paintings of undeclared meaning.

"Life can be assimilated in a film shown only once to a captive audience of one - a dark cell in which the level of illumination is determined by the solitary occupant. Art is not made by men and women that are wise but by those in search of wisdom, seeking wisdom and to known thelmselves, it is all we can know and to say something means nothing, there is nothing left to say" according to Dominic Rouse in 2007.

His work is exhibited internationally, in England as well as in the United States, in prestigious galleries and fairs, including at the Fresh Art Fair in London. He was name one of the most interesting photographers of this times. Brooks Jensen, editor in chief of the American magazine "LensWork", declared that Rouse does not take pictures of the world, he makes pictures of his soul.
