Hebru Brantley, Delux
United States  • 1981

Presentation

Hebru Brantley is an American contemporary artist from Chicago, known for his distinctive style that fuses urban art, pop culture , and Afrofuturist narratives. Born and raised on Chicago's South Side in the 1980s, Brantley draws inspiration from his surroundings, personal experiences, and social struggles to create work that is engaging, accessible, and deeply narrative.

Through his iconic characters, often children in search of adventure and meaning, Brantley addresses complex themes—identity, resilience, youth, social injustice—while making them understandable and powerfully evocative. His art is a bridge between past and future, between the personal and the universal, between collective memory and fiction.

His visual style draws heavily from Japanese anime, American comics, and major street art figures such as Jean-Michel Basquiat , Keith Haring , and KAWS. Brantley's world is recognizable by its bold colors, bold lines, and dynamic compositions. While spray paint is central to his work, he explores a wide variety of techniques and materials: oil, acrylic, watercolor, ink, coffee, tea—each medium becoming a means to expand the scope of his visual narratives.

The influence of the AfriCOBRA (African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists) movement, which emerged in Chicago in the 1960s and 1970s, profoundly influenced his practice. The activist murals of this African-American collective shaped Brantley's artistic consciousness, and he embraces their mission of cultural emancipation to reach a new generation through a contemporary and captivating aesthetic.

His creations—both on canvas and in public spaces—arouse a strong emotion mixed with joyful nostalgia. Brantley invites the viewer to journey into a fragmented universe where memories, dreams, struggles, and hopes intertwine.

Today, Hebru Brantley enjoys international recognition. He has exhibited in major cities such as London, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, Atlanta and Zurich, with notable participations at Art Basel (Switzerland and Miami), Frieze London and Scope New York . His work is featured in prestigious collections and he has collaborated with major brands such as Nike , Adidas and Hublot .

With a degree in film from Clark Atlanta University, Hebru Brantley combines her training in design, illustration, and visual storytelling to create work as impactful in form as it is in substance. Her art, both visionary and accessible, places the imagination at the service of collective memory and continues to inspire a new generation of artists and dreamers.
