Théo Tobiasse, born in Israel in 1927 to a Lithuanian family seeking a new homeland, is a renowned figure in contemporary art. His work is deeply infused with themes of exile, motherhood, love, and nostalgic memories of his childhood in Lithuania. Scenes of the green countryside of Kaletova, steamships adorned with colorful flags on the Niémen River, sleds gliding through the snowy streets of Kovno, and the warmth of round teapots and traditional samovars all shaped his artistic vision.
After traveling through Germany and Berlin, Tobiasse arrived in Paris in 1931, where he was met with the stark grayness of a train station—foreshadowing the dark years to come. During the Nazi occupation, his family went into hiding for two years, yet tragedy struck, leaving a lasting mark on his work. Following the Liberation, Tobiasse longed for light, warmth, and expansive skies, leading him to settle in Nice and later in Saint-Paul de Vence.
There, he discovered the mesmerizing lunar landscapes of the Saint-Barnabé plateau, which inspired his first painting. A visit to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam became a turning point—Rembrandt's The Jewish Bride revealed to him the mysteries of texture, glaze, and chiaroscuro, shaping his distinctive artistic technique.
Tobiasse's art is a poetic fusion of emotions and memories. Women as mothers and lovers, exile, sensory exaltation, music, and travel intertwine on his canvases, often set against the backgrounds of Venice, New York, and Jerusalem—his cities of inspiration. His works are frequently accompanied by emotionally charged words and phrases, not to explain but to extend their meaning.
Mastering multiple techniques, Tobiasse expressed his creativity through painting, sculpture, carborundum etching, pastel, drawing, ceramics, and stained glass. His unique artistic language made him a sought-after name in the art market, with collectors and galleries showcasing his work worldwide.
Théo Tobiasse lived and worked in Saint-Paul de Vence until his passing on November 3, 2012. Today, his legacy endures through major exhibitions, high-value art sales, and ongoing recognition of his contributions to modern art.
