Gerstein's early career saw him working as a children's book illustrator, earning the prestigious Israel Museum Prize for Illustration. In 1980, Gerstein revolutionized his practice by creating "Carved Figures" – a series of three-dimensional paintings crafted from cut steel, blending painting and sculpture in groundbreaking ways. His innovative approach to art led to the creation of "Momentum," the largest public sculpture in Singapore, demonstrating his ability to conceptualize and execute monumental projects.
