This work is the preparatory work for the final work today exhibited on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. Bernar Venet's work unfolds through monumental steel sculpture, he is an artist from the school of Nice, the city where he grew up. In the fall of 2009, he met the mayor of Nice who suggested that he make a large sculpture, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the joining of the County of Nice to France. The sculpture will be erected in the heart of the city, next to the Opera House, in a small car park along the promenade des Anglais. On May 31, 2010, the monument was inaugurated. The sculpture is 30 meters high, weighs 54 tons, it is fixed on a steel and concrete base of 64 m2, which weighs 40 tons. It thus becomes the tallest and heaviest work intended for public space in France. It is made up of nine vertical beams, spaced at the base, which meet at the top: nine oblique lines in Corten steel, which produces a protective brown rust. This sculpture is estimated at 2 million euros. Bernard Venet offered it to the city, which paid for its manufacture and installation: 280,000 euros. Venet has already signed in Nice, in 1988, a monumental iron arch near Place Masséna. "My sculpture has always maintained a close relationship with mathematics. Whether it is the geometry of Arcs, Angles or Oblique Lines on which, you know, I have their mathematical identity engraved. Take for example 224.5 ° Arc x 8 which is inscribed on a sculpture composed of 8 arcs of 224.5 ° each. My more complex works such as Random combinations of indeterminate lines or Accidents are identifiable on the other hand with more recent mathematics, such as the theory of chaos, disaster or the science of complexity. Masterpieces

Bernar Venet is a French visual artist , born in 1941 in Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. He has been living in the United States since 1966 where he has become known for his steel sculptures and his drawings. In the 60s, Venet showcased canvases covered with tar.

Bernar Venet's notoriety began during this period, with the creation of a formless sculpture, composed of a pile of coal poured on the ground. His capacity for intellectual abstraction and his taste for mathematical reasoning and experimentation lead Venet to what was soon to become conceptual art.

In the 80s, Bernar Venet set up the basic structure of his "Lignes indéterminées". He produced them in steel and installed in many urban spaces and public collections, including Nice, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, Strasbourg, Beijing, Austin, San Francisco, Museum of Grenoble. In 2011 Venet installed his monumental works in the Versailles gardens.

In 2022, Berlin's Tempelhof Kunsthalle hosted a five-month long retrospective spanning the artist's career from 1961 to 2021.
