Huguette Caland

Lebanon • 1931 - 2019

Biography

Huguette Caland was a Lebanese painter and sculptor. She studied painting and design at the American University of Beirut.

The daughter of Lebanon's first post-independence president, it is unsurprising that Caland's works are bold and provocative. She challenged traditional representations of sexuality, desire and the female body, uncompromising in her defiance of conventions and expectations.

Following her marriage with George Apostu, a Romanian sculptor, Caland and Apostu collaborated on numerous paintings and sculptures. Caland also worked with the fashion designer Pierre Cardin to produce a line of kaftans in 1979.

Caland received an award from the American University of Beirut in 2017, in recognition of her expansive artistic career. She died in Lebanon in 2019.
