Scott Naismith

With the ambition to become an artist, Scott studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. In June 2000, he left with a BDes in illustration and engraving. Since graduating Scott has been a full-time artist, working from his studio in Glasgow. Much of his time is spent traveling across the country in search of inspiration for another depiction of the Scottish landscape. The many lakes, valleys and islands of the west coast are among his favorite subjects for his vibrant and atmospheric oils. Scott has lectured part-time since 2004 and now lectures one day a week in the Creative Arts Department at West College Scotland. Scott uses vivid colors in a vigorous application to represent the rapidly changing light conditions of the west coast of Scotland. The use of color often becomes a very emotional response to the subject, while the values can remain representative. The love he has for his native Scottish countryside is carried into his work by a boiling energy with which he manipulates color with the palette knife and brush. Scott's recent work focuses on transitional skies and the many colors involved when light bursts the cloud. These shifting horizons from dark to light are a metaphor for optimism and hope.
