
Biography
Anna Mary Robertson Moses, aka Grandma Moses, was an American folk artist. Born in 1860, Moses started her painting career at the age of 78. She witnessed a rapid rise on the art scene in the 1950s, with her work being included in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art less than a year after her debut.
Moses became a cultural figure, being featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 1953. A documentary of her life, entitled “Grandma Moses", was nominated for an Academy Award.
Moses died in 1961. Her works, however, have retained their popularity. Moses' 1943 painting, Sugaring Off, sold for 1.36 million dollars at auction in 2006.
