Artwork location: France

This painting depicts the site of Mukula where Yianrupa Nangala was born, with all the details of the landform, the food found there, and their associations with the Dreamtime Ancestors.
Mukula located east of Jupiter Well in Western Australia, more than 850 km of track from Alice Springs, is like an identity card for Yinarupa Nangala. She learned to tame it, to understand it, to venerate it to become its legitimate guardian. In all of her artistic work, she celebrates this place with passion and reverence.

Yinarupa paints her traditional land where the women gather to conduct ceremonial business. The sacred designs she paints have an intuitive sense of space and rhythm and are associated with the rockhole site of Mukula. These places are also sites with much food, and the women gather the seeds of the native Acacia. They collect the seeds and grind it into flour and eventually bake bread from this for ceremonies.

Her paintings also commonly show rockholes which are important water sources in the desert. During ancestral times a large group of women came from the west and stopped at this site to perform the ceremonies associated with the area.

Yinarupa is the daughter of Anatjari Tjampitjinpa, one of the founding members of Papunya Tula, she is recognized as a major artist of the second generation of painters and she become a highly collectable artist. His brothers Ray James Tjangala is also an accomplished artist.

She has received several awards for her artworks and she is also in major private collections and museums :
2009, Winner 26th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, Darwin.
2009, Finalist - Western Australian Art Prize, Perth.
2010, Finalist - Western Australian Art Prize, Perth.
2014, Finalist - Wynne Prize, AGNSW
2015, Finalist 32nd Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, Darwin
2016, Finalist 33rd Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, Darwin

Yinarupa Nangala

Australia  • 1958

Yinarupa, born in 1958, is the daughter of Anatjari Tjampitjinpa, one of the founding members of the Aboriginal pictorial movement, and the sister of Ray James Tjangala and Mantua Nangala, also accomplished artists.

A patrol brought them to Papunya in 1963 and she left the traditional nomadic life.

She was also one of the wives of Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi, another influential artist (who died in 1998). Yinarupa became familiar with modern techniques while helping her elderly husband complete the pointillist background of his paintings.

She started her own career as a painter in 1996 like the other women of Kintore and Kiwirrkurra. Yinarupa's unique art is to use a combination of traditional and contemporary symbols providing an aerial view of the Pintupi area.
