Gérard Xuriguera, art critic

The direct carving, the gesture of removing in order to build, the taste for the beautiful profession, have not deserted the vocabulary of many sculptors. Thus, on the strength of the achievements bequeathed by previous generations, the practice of Jean-Christophe Couradin does not refute the contribution of tradition, but adapted for its use. Backed by a very controlled technique, the sculptor has therefore created a universe of his own, from the properties of wood, already a sculpture in itself.
There he freed up his inventiveness, in accordance with the founding laws of his structural arrangements. Except that he chose to measure himself against particularly hard and unruly woods, such as Pernambuco mahogany, Macassar ebony, or even Madagascan rosewood, where the treatment of the material, subjected to the gouge test, requires scrupulous attention. Then follows a patient quest for the most refined form, turned towards the most radical simplification. Long worked by small repeated touches, the original mass sees its contours thinning, its sides curving, its median axis widening or tightening, hollow grooves settle and thread in a spiral, slight conical bulges rise, undulations take shape, overlaps adjust, until the velvety curves and the logic of their sequences harmonize in the synthesis.
Here, no tapered endings, inappropriate perforations, just curvy curves, wraps and unwinds hemmed with a quiet sensuality, between fluidity and compactness, rusticity and preciousness, delicacy and robustness, allied to the rigor of the design. No identification with any referent, if not in everyone's imagination, but something organic or mineral, Apollonian and Dionysian, barely broken by inevitable changes of rhythms. , which give this stripped down language its charm and authenticity. And beyond these considerations, the dialogue established with this living and familiar material which seems to rise from the depths of memory, is above all a personal story, nourished from within.
Now, in addition to the play of shadow and light, there are also silky shimmers that modulate the texture of the epidermis, fragmented and elongated shapes never disjointed, others gathered in a fan and adorned with rare light shades, which diversify the rendering. and its meaning. Ultimately, the utterance leads to its most watched expression, no drought alters the effusive vein of its studied swings. On the contrary, affirms the vision of a true humanist, master of his style and his impulses, who is aware, as Oscar Wilde pointed out, that "simplicity is perhaps the refuge of complicated things".
