Artwork location: United States

This abstract painting is an arresting amalgamation of color and movement that commands the viewer's attention with its raw energy and dynamic composition. Dominated by a tumultuous interplay of reds, blues, and earthy tones, the artwork evokes a sense of chaos and intensity. Swirling brushstrokes and overlapping forms create a vivid, almost tactile texture, compelling the observer to delve deeper into the scene. The composition is intricate yet harmonious, with contrasting hues meshing together to create a symphony of visual sensation. The use of red conveys passion and urgency, while the blue provides a cooling counterbalance, suggesting depth and contemplation amidst the frenzy. The earthy tones ground the piece, offering a semblance of stability in an otherwise stormy tableau. What sets this work apart is its ability to marry abstraction with an evocative narrative. While the forms are non-representational, they hint at figures in motion—perhaps engaged in a frenetic dance or a chaotic battle. This ambiguity invites various interpretations, allowing each viewer to imbue the scene with personal significance. Moreover, the vigorous brushwork and application of paint provide a palpable sense of movement, as if the scene is alive and constantly evolving. This is enhanced by the layering of pigments, which adds dimension and a visceral quality to the painting. In summary, this piece is a masterful exploration of color, texture, and motion. It challenges the viewer to look beyond the surface and engage with the underlying emotional currents, making it a profoundly captivating and unique work of art.

Presentation

Malone grew up in Houston and has lived most of his life in the American South and Southwest -- the settings of much of his work. He holds degrees from the University of Houston (BA 1978) and The University of Arizona (MFA 1986). His polymathic career, in addition to painting, covers numerous experiences and disciplines. He has been a soldier, a bartender, a newspaper journalist for five years between degrees, an instructor in English literature and writing at several colleges and universities, a book critic, an editor at a literary magazine, a writer and poet, an author. His books include the award-winning In An Arid Land: Thirteen Stories of Texas (1995), a second story collection (2000), and a novel, This House of Women (2001). Since its publication, and before, Malone has lived and worked full-time as a visual artist. His paintings have appeared in a number of exhibitions, galleries and publications, on both sides of the Atlantic. First an abstractionist, Malone investigates his themes, people and landscapes in several other painterly genres as well.

His painting career began, ironically, when his mother Lillian died in 1996 as he was still engaged in a life of letters and living at The University of Illinois in Urbana. From his childhood on, Lillian had painted florals and landscapes, and she was part of a small association of women artists in the Houston area. He remembers still the intriguing studio smells that hovered around them -- the fumes of old turpentine! -- and the comic nature of their painters' smocks. His godmother, Fernie Parker, was a bit famous back then for her roses, and she was the leader, the teacher, of the group. In summer workshops, Malone also studied under Fernie at her studio on Houston's westside. It was thrilling and joyous and playful -- his approach to painting hasn't changed much in all these years -- and his mother was full of encouragement. A bank officer by profession, Lillian also taught him how to get by as an artist, though it would be many years before he heeded her words and bent his fortunes toward painting.

Among his many honors are a Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts (1990-92) and the Jesse Jones Award for Best Fiction from the Texas Institute of Letters (1996). In painting, he was named an International Contemporary Master by World Wide Art Books in 2011. More recently, in Europe, Contemporary Art Curator called him a "Top Artist to Watch in 2024"; he was awarded the 6th International Prize Leonardo Da Vinci: The Universal Artist from the Effetto Arte Foundation and the National Museum of Science and Technology at Milan; and, at Madrid, in March, Contemporary Art Collectors named him a Global Art Virtuoso. Come June, in Venice, Italy's Effetto Arte Foundation will also serve him with the International Prize Phoenix for the Arts in recognition of his lifelong contributions to civilization. In addition, he recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Who's Who (2019) and certificate(s) of Artistic Achievement from the Luxembourg Art Prize (2021/22).

For more than a year, in association with the awesome ITSLIQUID Group, Malone's four-canvas series, "Sonoran Lace, Seasonal Moods: Desert Landscapes at the Borderline," has been on tour, starting with the Venice International Art Fair in December, 2022, then moving to Rome and London before returning to Venice. In April, "Sonora" appeared with ITSLIQUID at the Anima Mundi Festival during the  60th Venice Biennial of Art. He also presented at ArtExpo New York (2023/24) in association with World Wide Art Promotion out of Santa Barbara. The Rossocinabro Gallery in Rome (Cristina Madini) and the AccessArt agency in NYC (Maria Jameson) represent him full-time.

Malone now lives and works at his studio in Rockport, Texas, a touristy fishing village on the Gulf of Mexico.
