Work from the period "Encephalic structures" (1983-1984)
Among the species living on earth, man is probably the only one to possess this disposition to adapt and transform his living conditions. By the quality of his brain, he can project himself into other imaginary spaces. I tried to transcribe his daring transmigration using the brush, abandoning oil painting in favor of acrylic, a more rapid execution.
The inner life of my characters, stretched like a bow, moved the breathing of the earth towards other structures. By veiling constraints, needs and impulses through their dreams, the actors in my paintings migrated from the world below to that above. Their language became a curved and ascending line which lacerated the envelope of darkness.
Assimilating their physical life to a horizontal line, I compared their spiritual manifestations to the vertical of desires and prowess. The paths of shadows and hesitations, but also their moral fissures, were attenuated there. Through their natural disposition to perfection and their aptitude for metamorphoses, my characters appropriated the dawn of time. They redesigned it in their image. Sculptors of their own inner world, they gave, to the meaning of their dreams, an intention, an orientation and a finality towards an improbable survival. Filled with earthly foods, they always asked for more. Like grains of sand, they lit up with immensity.
Describing this period of my painting, Roger Secrétain, former mayor of Orléans and man of letters, wrote that it was an effort to change from anxiety towards appeasement, from fantasy towards the natural, from shadow towards clarity on a road which would go, as it were, from Hieronymus Bosch to Botticelli, outside of time and place, and which nevertheless runs through our present day.
Once again, I dug into the brains of my characters. I had to find new paths without getting lost in its convoluted labyrinth. By developing the spiritual and physical architectures of their new environments, my actors appropriated the cosmos. These encephalic structures were similar to reconstructed lives devoid of a fleshly envelope. They accessed the abode of the blessed, comparable to a Hyperborean humanity.
In order to have forms summarizing my research, I drew on illustrations of the brain. The protuberances of the brain, its lobes, projections and fissures, its arborescences and its convolutions, became my new sources of inspiration. It was no longer necessary for me to represent the man. He had transformed.
This period was then marked by the beginnings of a progressive abandonment of the identifiable form in favor of an emerging abstraction.

Gilbert Sabatier is a painter, engraver, sculptor. A creator since 1960, he is the author of 20 periods ranging from figurative to contemporary research. His entire work represents two thousand paintings, 800 sculptures and 250 engravings.
His work is a hypnotizing and protean universe that questions the art of our time in all its forms, colors and movements. Explorer of the impossible, alchemist of matter and adventurer of art, Sabatier has never ceased to create in complete freedom paintings, engravings, serigraphs and sculptures sometimes monumental, sometimes light.
From his early figurative works to his research on weightlessness and suspended time, from his paintings between dreams and reality to his quest for abstraction, from his fascination with the laws of the universe to the invention of a new genre, a synthesis of all his obsessions, the artist reveals himself like never before.
Throughout his life, he tried to artistically express the aspirations and doubts of human beings facing an undeciphered universe. Those who discover his work will immerse themselves in the heart and mind of a resolutely free artist.
