In Hand Grenade, Robert Saller overlays the language of pop culture with the latent violence of emotional rupture. A seemingly nostalgic image of a couple mid-embrace is rendered in a bold, stencil-like aesthetic reminiscent of vintage comic books. But the background subtly shifts the narrative: barely visible by day, detailed diagrams of the F1 hand grenade – known colloquially as “Limonka" – appear beneath the surface, activated fully only when darkness falls.
Part of the artist's conceptually rich MAN WOMAN Blackout series, the painting incorporates luminophore pigment that causes hidden elements to glow in the dark, revealing the visual metaphor in full. The effect is both seductive and sinister. The series was created following the artist's own painful breakup and unofficially bears the subtitle How to Get Rid of Your Ex, with each painting presenting a symbolic “tool" of separation or control.
In Hand Grenade, intimacy is rendered as a form of tension – where passion and danger exist in the same breath. It is both a critique of romantic tropes and a psychological reflection on how love, loss, and power intertwine.

Robert Saller (b. 1967) is a Ukrainian contemporary artist known for his bold fusion of pop art aesthetics, conceptual satire, and post-Soviet critique. A graduate of the Uzhhorod College of Applied Arts, Saller has been a key member of the underground art group Poptrans since 1996. He now lives and works in Lviv, Ukraine.
Saller primarily works with acrylics, rarely using brushes. Instead, he applies paint through layers of stencils using rollers and sponges, creating a graphic, print-like texture reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein's visual language. Yet beneath the surface gloss lies biting irony and psychological depth. His works often deconstruct gender dynamics, emotional trauma, and cultural mythologies through a visual language of seductive colours and familiar iconography.
In his acclaimed Man Woman Blackout series, Saller uses luminophore pigment to make hidden elements glow in the dark – a literal metaphor for the unseen layers of human relationships. Other notable series, such as Bad Beautiful and Carpathian Album, reframe innocence, nationalism, and nostalgia with unsettling wit.
Robert Saller's artworks are at once visually striking and intellectually disarming, drawing the viewer into a world where irony, violence, and desire coexist just beneath the surface.
