Robert Saller's Potassium Cyanide belongs to his provocative Man Woman Blackout series – works that reveal a second layer when viewed in darkness. Beneath its seemingly romantic Pop Art imagery, the painting conceals an ironic narrative of control and revenge. The female figure, portrayed as a nurse, stands surrounded by diagrams of chemical formulas – including cyanide, a symbol of lethal precision.
The artwork uses luminophore pigment, which emits a spectral light when the environment darkens, exposing hidden scientific details invisible in daylight. This interplay between attraction and threat, affection and toxicity, runs throughout the series, conceived after the artist's own emotional breakup.
Executed with layered acrylic and stencil technique, Potassium Cyanide combines the bold visual language of Pop Art with the wit of conceptual irony, turning the chemistry of love into an experiment in both form and feeling.
Note: The artwork bears minor traces of wear consistent with its active exhibition history, including light handling marks and subtle surface signs from previous packaging. A professionally restored area is visible in the lower right corner, where the canvas had once been slightly torn. The restoration is stable and does not affect the overall visual integrity of the work.

Robert Saller (b. 1967) is a Ukrainian contemporary artist known for his bold fusion of pop art aesthetics, conceptual satire, and post-Soviet critique. A graduate of the Uzhhorod College of Applied Arts, Saller has been a key member of the underground art group Poptrans since 1996. He now lives and works in Lviv, Ukraine.
Saller primarily works with acrylics, rarely using brushes. Instead, he applies paint through layers of stencils using rollers and sponges, creating a graphic, print-like texture reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein's visual language. Yet beneath the surface gloss lies biting irony and psychological depth. His works often deconstruct gender dynamics, emotional trauma, and cultural mythologies through a visual language of seductive colours and familiar iconography.
In his acclaimed Man Woman Blackout series, Saller uses luminophore pigment to make hidden elements glow in the dark – a literal metaphor for the unseen layers of human relationships. Other notable series, such as Bad Beautiful and Carpathian Album, reframe innocence, nationalism, and nostalgia with unsettling wit.
Robert Saller's artworks are at once visually striking and intellectually disarming, drawing the viewer into a world where irony, violence, and desire coexist just beneath the surface.
