In this striking work, Jean Soyer deploys the full expressive power of his oil on canvas technique. The dramatic contrast between the dark, almost black background and the explosion of scarlet and orange reds creates immediate visual tension. The broad brushstrokes and comb marks, characteristic of his technique, generate thick reliefs that capture and reflect the light, giving the work an almost sculptural dimension. The gestures are both controlled and spontaneous, revealing a delicate balance between intention and chance in the abstract composition.
The influence of Nicolas de Staël is clearly evident in this painting through the bold use of material and the juxtaposition of intense colors. However, the legacy of Georges Mathieu is also evident in the lyrical gestures and chromatic dramaturgy. The composition also evokes the Abstract Expressionism of Franz Kline through its marked contrasts and energetic movements, although Soyer uses color as the dominant element here, unlike the monochrome often favored by Kline. The possible presence of Fabienne Verdier is evident in the mastery of broad gestures and the search for a form of primordial energy.
This work is part of the rich tradition of European lyrical abstraction while engaging in dialogue with American abstract expressionism. The limited but intensely expressive palette recalls certain compositions by Pierre Soulages, although Soyer favors red over black. The gestural dimension and energy emanating from the canvas also evoke the work of Hans Hartung, particularly from his period in the 1950s and 1960s. Jean Soyer thus succeeds in creating a personal pictorial language that, while belonging to an identifiable artistic lineage, asserts a singular sensitivity and approach to contemporary abstraction.

Presentation
Jean Soyer is a French painter who was born in 1937. After studying the trades of engraving, lithographing and graphic designing at the École Estienne (Graduate School of Arts and Printing Industry), he built a carrier as a publicist.
The sight of a Nicolas de Staël's painting in 1987 made him conscious of an imperious need to transcribe his feelings into painting. He left the tracks of the master and accomplished himself into his own style of lyric abstraction with the influences of Georges Mathieu and Fabienne Verdier, which allowed himself from 1997 on to make his passion a profession.
His oil, knife and comb paintings are recognizable from their warm and intense colors, deep contrasts, calligraphic gestures, and dynamic compositions which seem to expand far beyond the canvas.
Since 2007, Jean Soyer presides over the Salon Violet, a contemporary art salon created in 1935 and which biennial expositions allow to turn the light on a large selection of artists.
