El uso del color es fundamental en cualquier obra artística y se considera una de las principales herramientas del artista. Es difícil imaginar una obra que exista sin el uso del color, incluso cuando el artista elige presentar la ausencia de color.
A lo largo de la historia y los movimientos artísticos, el uso y el significado atribuido al color han cambiado, pero la esencia del color sigue siendo constante. Cada artista debe dominar las propiedades del color para controlar su composición. En la restauración de cuadros, el color se convierte en una ciencia necesaria, ya que se requiere conocimiento de las diferentes moléculas para identificar los colores y mezclas originales utilizados por el artista.
En la historia del arte, la importancia del color ha variado según las épocas y las regiones geográficas. Durante el Renacimiento italiano, por ejemplo, hubo un debate conocido como el Paragone, que enfrentaba la autoridad del color con la del dibujo. Según las escuelas, algunos consideraban que el color era lo que creaba emoción y poder visual en una obra de arte. Los colores adquirían significados específicos, como el blanco simbolizando la pureza y el azul asociado a la divinidad, utilizado comúnmente para representar a la Virgen María.
En general, los colores se pueden dividir en tres categorías: cálidos, fríos y neutros. Estas categorías emanan atmósferas que los pintores pueden utilizar para influir en la emoción de su obra. Por ejemplo, el arte barroco manipulaba contrastes entre colores cálidos y fríos para resaltar la fuerza de los cuerpos y jugar con efectos de luz.
Fue en el siglo XIX con los impresionistas que se exploraron nuevas formas de ver y transmitir el entorno cromático. Estos artistas evitaban mezclas complejas y pintaban al aire libre, reinventando el uso del color para representar la realidad. La pintura abstracta y subjetiva se centró en el color como tema, con artistas como Mark Rothko, Piet Mondrian y Kasimir Malevich, quienes exploraron diversas facetas de la expresión cromática.
En el arte contemporáneo, la fotografía, el collage y el arte pop continúan utilizando el color de maneras diversas, explorando sus múltiples facetas. Picasso, por ejemplo, afirmaba: "Cuando no tengo azul, uso rojo".
