Para definir la fotografía urbana primero debemos abordar la fotografía callejera para explicar las principales diferencias. La fotografía callejera se asocia a menudo con la edad de oro de la fotografía de los años 1890 a 1970. Esta técnica fotográfica permite a los grandes fotógrafos captar la expresión de los rostros con más profundidad y resaltar la emoción. Sin embargo, esta perspectiva pasa por alto algunos aspectos de la fotografía urbana original. Los edificios y su arquitectura se desvanecen a favor de los rostros y la puesta en escena.

A semejanza de una sociedad capitalista posmoderna y de consumo masivo, se privilegia el entretenimiento y la inmediatez. No hay nada de malo en eso, pero hay que aceptarlo y la fotografía urbana es diferente en esto.

Similar a la fotografía callejera tradicional, la fotografía urbana intenta congelar no solo a las personas sino también los lugares. La fotografía urbana captura y sublima la arquitectura de los edificios mediante encuadres y juegos de luces de los que solo el fotógrafo profesional tiene el secreto. Con ello, cada imagen lleva consigo el comentario del artista sobre el entorno urbano: hay que saber que el 50% de la población mundial vive ahora en ciudades.

En resumen, la fotografía urbana no se puede reducir a la simple fotografía callejera, puesto que también inmortaliza la arquitectura urbana operando con un ángulo más amplio. Captura todo lo que se relaciona con lo urbano: resalta las líneas de los rascacielos de Manhattan, los transeúntes no son necesariamente el tema principal, los objetos se convierten en un tema de predilección. La fotografía urbana también es crítica con su época, en lugar de una simple espectadora.
