El fenómeno cultural de las vacaciones en la playa se hizo popular a finales del siglo XVIII en Gran Bretaña como una teoría médica popular para combatir el aumento de la industrialización. Los beneficios de estar en la playa se debían en gran medida a que los médicos de la época creían que bañarse en las frías olas del mar era beneficioso para afecciones como la "melancolía" y el "bazo", un exceso de bilis negra que hacía que las personas fueran introvertidas, estuvieran deprimidas o de mal humor. A lo largo de los dos siglos siguientes, esta prescripción no se desviaría demasiado y se desarrolló a la par que el turismo, permitiendo una evasión de la vida cotidiana. El sentimiento de las vacaciones es, en efecto, uno de los que hay que saborear y, como es lógico, atrae al artista. También en 1845, para la pionera Anna Atkins, esta mayor posibilidad de viajar a la orilla del mar fue la punta de lanza de la fotografía de algas como solución a la complejidad de su dibujo. En los momentos más felices no es raro querer congelarlos y esperar que no se acaben nunca, que es lo que Hégémon se esfuerza por conseguir en sus obras de marinas y paisajes marinos. Mientras que la obra de Ji Marie-Laure Inguimberti evoca la emoción y te transporta al aire salado.
