The unpublished drawings
The collection of engravings presented for this exhibition is completed by twenty-eight drawings, seventeen of which are previously unpublished, from the estate of Claude Bonin-Pissarro. He is the son of the French painter Alexandre Bonin and Jeanne Pissarro (known as Cocotte, 1881–1948), daughter of Camille. Jeanne, unlike her brothers, is the only child who will not receive the artistic education instilled by the "father of the Impressionists." Indeed, as Lionel Pissarro, the painter's great-grandson, has pointed out, Madame Pissarro rejected the idea of her daughter becoming an artist and preferred sewing or embroidery, as reflected in the various portraits painted by her father.
The seventeen previously unpublished drawings were absent from the sale of the Alexandre Bonin and Jeanne Pissarro collection held on June 26, 1931, at the Hôtel Drouot. They are therefore being shown for the first time in our exhibition. We are also presenting two pieces from the 1931 sale: La Chaumière and La Jeune Paysanne, as well as around ten drawings collected over time and on which we have carried out bibliographic research in order to trace their provenance. We have also submitted them to the expert eye of Joachim Pissarro, who is producing the catalogue raisonné of his ancestor's drawings, and who has issued a certificate of authenticity for each of these sheets.
The aim of our exhibition is to bring together Camille Pissarro's engraved and drawn works. We hope to reconsider the corpus of posthumous engravings, long forgotten, which nevertheless constitute the most accomplished version of the artist's work (final state), as he intended. We place on the same level the posthumous engravings and the preparatory drawings, which very often bear the same monogram (Lugt 613e). Through these two facets of his work, Camille Pissarro's line, whether in burin or pencil, is confronted with the viewer's gaze.
