Renée Sintenis's Berliner Bär is among the artist's most iconic motifs and one of Berlin's major artistic symbols, the bear having been the city's heraldic emblem for centuries. Created in 1948 and published in the prestigious portfolio by Ernst Hauswedell & Co. in Hamburg, this work belongs to a pivotal period in Sintenis's post-war production.
With its remarkable economy of lines, the figure of the standing young bear expresses strength, restraint, and sensitivity. It fully reflects the modernist sculptural approach that earned Renée Sintenis international acclaim. As early as 1932, the artist had conceived one of the most iconic modern representations of the Berlin Bear, installed in Berlin-Nikolassee. This model subsequently became the official reference for the Golden Bear, the highest award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
This work is a drypoint etching on paper, signed and inscribed by hand in pencil by the artist. It has a long and well-documented provenance, including the historic sale at the Gerd Rosen Gallery in Berlin in 1955.
Both timeless and strikingly contemporary, it offers a rare combination of decorative power and historical significance, making this work a choice piece for any collection devoted to modern sculpture, 20th-century German art, or great European cultural symbols.
Presentation
Renée Sintenis (1888–1965) was a major German sculptor and engraver of the 20th century. Trained in Berlin, she made her mark early on with a modernist approach based on the simplification of forms and a great economy of means.
Her work is primarily devoted to animal figures, which she treats with a unique sculptural sensitivity, combining strength, elegance, and restrained expressiveness. From the 1920s onwards, her sculptures and prints enjoyed widespread international success.
In 1932, she created one of the most iconic modern representations of the Berlin Bear, which later became the official model for the Golden Bear, the top prize at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Despite the persecution she suffered under the Nazi regime, Renée Sintenis regained significant institutional recognition after the war. Her work is now held in numerous public and private collections and remains an essential reference point in modern German sculpture and printmaking.
