This work is one of the pieces from the Political Animal series by Guillaume Piot, representing the 2017 presidential candidates surrounded by animals. A sort of political zoomorphism. All of the works gave rise to the publication of an eponymous work bringing together the 20 drawings accompanied by texts. The work is signed with the pseudonym of the artist Prag.
This captivating artistic work presents a monochrome scene of a man in a suit, faceless but recognizable to the attentive eye, surrounded by a row of cats lying at his feet. The artist chose an exclusively black and white palette, which gives the image an intense sobriety and emphasizes every detail with striking precision. What makes this piece unique is the juxtaposition between the seriousness and sophistication of the man in the suit, the stance of the politician asking for forgiveness and the playful diversity of the cats around him. Each cat is distinct, with carefully drawn features, exhibiting different poses and expressions that inject a liveliness into the scene. The man, in contrast, stands straight with his arms slightly outstretched, creating an impression of authority or perhaps a gesture of blessing. The choice of the pristine white background helps focus attention on the central subject without any distractions. The sharp contrasts between the black and white elements accentuate the complexity of the man's costume and the diversity of textures and shapes of the cats. The absence of the man's face adds an intriguing dimension to the work, leaving room for interpretation and questioning, while directing our gaze towards the feline companions at his feet. This work, through its precise execution and its original concept, provokes reflection on the relationships between humans and domestic animals, evoking themes of companionship, control and calm amidst the apparent chaos. A bestiary of today Sacred zoo, that of Guillaume Piot who transforms politicians, faceless but recognizable, into kings of a jungle that could well represent the French! A sharp-looking draftsman, Guillaume Piot did not choose zoomorphy to portray these animals that are politicians: don't we compare them to elephants when they advance in a monolithic herd, to old foxes when cunning competes with cynicism or even with monkeys when they make fun of the world? And finally, aren't we the spectators of a sort of cattle fair when it comes to choosing the one with the best teeth to bite into France or the most beautiful panache to seduce her? A past master in animal iconography, Guillaume Piot revisits the bestiaries of yesteryear in his own way. His pencil is delicate but often biting like those pitbulls and gorillas who crowd around Marine Le Pen. And what about these vultures who frame François Fillon while the geese sound the alarm against the attackers? Surrounded by a composite courtyard, bears, giraffes, camels, Emmanuel Macron clenches his fists while Jean-Luc Mélenchon reenacts freedom guiding the people in the midst of goats and sheep. Arnaud Montebourg, him, tries to compete with a peacock making the wheel ... as for François Hollande, alone in his palace, he tries to make himself a rhinoceros leather ... and all the others are to be discovered, smile on the lips, thought in mind. These politicians have no face, but they have a name thanks to these "nice animals" who surround them to offer them a little of their mind.
