Artwork location: France

In this striking work, Jean Soyer offers us an abstract composition where masses of deep blue and silvery gray collide, punctuated by touches of scarlet that subtly attract the eye. Through his oil on canvas technique, the artist fully exploits the materiality of paint, creating pronounced reliefs through the use of very broad brushes and combs that literally sculpt the surface. This gestural approach generates a dynamic tension between the different chromatic zones, perhaps evoking, through pareidolia, a nocturnal landscape crossed by a flash of lightning or a horizon line where sky and sea meet in an imminent storm.

The influence of Nicolas de Staël seems perceptible in the way Soyer structures his composition through colored masses with clear boundaries, while maintaining an atmospheric sensibility. We also find the energy of the spontaneous gesture specific to Georges Mathieu, although Soyer seems more interested in the confrontation of surfaces than in calligraphy. This work also shows affinities with the research of Hans Hartung, particularly in the treatment of incisions that striate the pictorial surface, or with Pierre Soulages in the exploration of contrasts between light and darkness, although Soyer here favors a more varied palette.

Jean Soyer's approach is fully in line with the tradition of European lyrical abstraction while renewing it with a contemporary approach. Unlike Fabienne Verdier, whose inspiration is often calligraphic, Soyer here seems more concerned with the creation of pictorial spaces where emotions are translated through the interplay of materials and colors. This canvas demonstrates accomplished technical mastery, where each gesture, each thickness of material contributes to an immersive visual experience, inviting the viewer to dive into a universe where abstraction becomes pure emotional language, beyond any explicit narration.

Presentation

Jean Soyer is a French painter who was born in 1937. After studying the trades of engraving, lithographing and graphic designing at the École Estienne (Graduate School of Arts and Printing Industry), he built a carrier as a publicist.

The sight of a Nicolas de Staël's painting in 1987 made him conscious of an imperious need to transcribe his feelings into painting. He left the tracks of the master and accomplished himself into his own style of lyric abstraction with the influences of Georges Mathieu and Fabienne Verdier, which allowed himself from 1997 on to make his passion a profession.

His oil, knife and comb paintings are recognizable from their warm and intense colors, deep contrasts, calligraphic gestures, and dynamic compositions which seem to expand far beyond the canvas.

Since 2007, Jean Soyer presides over the Salon Violet, a contemporary art salon created in 1935 and which biennial expositions allow to turn the light on a large selection of artists.
