This triptych is formed by three skate decks made of 7 ply grade A Canadian maple wood. This set belongs to a numbered limited edition of only 125.

Often catalogued as misogynist, the truth is that the work by Nobuyoshi Araki wanders in between opposites. The culture of traditional and contented Japanese character crash against their sexual interest and what it is believed to be shocking and sometimes even dark, but belongs to everyday life to many.

Presentation

Nobuyoshi Araki, born in Tokyo in 1940, is one of Japan's most influential and controversial photographers, known for his provocative, deeply personal, and boundary-pushing work. A pioneer of contemporary Japanese photography, Araki explores themes of love, desire, mortality, and the complexities of human relationships. After studying film and stage direction at Chiba University, he began his career at the Dentsu Advertising Agency before fully dedicating himself to photography in 1965. His work captures the essence of Tokyo, from its neon-lit streets to intimate, everyday life moments, blending documentary and fiction in a striking visual narrative. Often called an iconoclast, Araki stylizes his name with a "K" to emphasize his anarchic artistic approach. His extensive portfolio includes over 350 published photobooks, covering a wide spectrum of themes—from urban life and erotic photography to deeply emotional visual diaries. His groundbreaking series Sentimental Journey (1971), documenting his honeymoon with his wife, Aoki Yoko, launched his career, while Winter Journey (1990) provided a heart-wrenching portrayal of her final days battling cancer.

Araki's signature style is defined by bold compositions, high-contrast black-and-white and color photography, and a fearless exploration of eroticism. He is particularly known for his Kinbaku series, featuring women bound in traditional Japanese rope bondage—a practice often misinterpreted as purely fetishistic but rooted in an aesthetic and symbolic tradition. His depictions of sexuality have ignited debates about censorship, particularly in Japan, where explicit content remains heavily regulated. Despite the controversies, his work continues to gain international recognition, with major exhibitions at institutions such as the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, the Fondation Cartier in Paris, and the Tate Modern in London. In 2024, new retrospectives and previously unseen artworks have reignited interest in his artistic evolution, reaffirming his status as one of the most daring and uncompromising photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries. As a visionary who challenges social norms through art, Araki's influence spans generations, shaping contemporary photography with his unique blend of intimacy, eroticism, and raw human emotion.
