Taking inspiration from the natural world around me and using an array of pencils with varying hardness, I build my compositions up from tens of thousands of minute circles – one of the most minimal mark-making gestures. Once the image starts building up, the aggregations take on the complex morphologies that can be found in nature, not as representations so much as evocations, where signification arises via structure and repetition rather than through the mimicking of the visible feature of organic matter.
