This work is from a series of work called, 'Natural Rhythms' which is preoccupied with an intense inquisitiveness about the world. Julie does not endeavour to portray a realistic painting of the landscape although all of her paintings derive from photographs and studies from an actual place, but aims to fuse abstraction and representational elements into her work. This painting is both expressive and emotive, capturing a sense of nostalgia through a love of painting with line and using spontaneous and expressive areas of colour. The dark lines often outline branches and the distinctive contours and their position in the foreground recall the formal qualities of Japanese prints. Shadows in the work are often ambitious, hinting at glimpses of other life and activity. This piece is a piece full of hope and calm movement, a painting that is sublime, taking the viewer into a more thoughtful and 'idealised" vision of the world. Providing a form of escapism from the real horrors of this unsettled world. Giving the viewer an opportunity to 'breathe' and be inspired by the wonders of the natural world.

Born in Lancashire, Julie Edwards is based in the UK, where she has been working from her studio at Eagle Works Studios and Gallery since 1991. Since 2020, Julie has been working in a purpose build studio at the bottom of her garden. Julie has been working steadily, progressing from large semi-abstract paintings that often took on an aerial view of both industrial and natural landscape, towards working now in a more sophisticated and personalised semi-abstract format.
Julie introduces herself as a semi-abstract landscape artist whose artwork is very much influenced by the natural environment around her. Paces she visited and experienced become images in her mind and inspiration for a new painting. Capturing the experiences into journals and later on sketches. She describes eventually transferring her inspiration as" an entirely new experience, almost an emotional response.'' where other factors such as literature read, escapism from the goings on around her and the horrors in the world, spirituality and sometimes mythology. Sometimes a painting is created from just being obsessed by drawing with different qualities of line, or looking at the essence of light, or simply using different balances of colour. All of these factors can have an impact on the work back in the studio.
Besides being a painter, Julie Edwards is also a lecturer at the City of Wolverhampton (1994- to date: Visual studies and painting)
