Artwork location: Australia

Angelina Ngala builds up many fine layers of dotting over a carbon black background as if she is observing the bush plum plant form an aerial perspective as it in bourgeons over her country of Arlparra. The subtle changes in the depth and intensity of the layers of dot-work produce a multi-dimensional textured and kaleidoscopic surface.

"Her canvases characteristically feature an intense concentration of dots which produce the effect of movement or shadows, across the surface. Her work is distinct from that of other artists in the community in the clarity of her colour schemes. Placed on dark backgrounds, the dots take on a pure, ephemeral quality." The OXFORD Companion to Aboriginal Art and Culture, 2000, OUP

Presentation

Angeline Pwerle Ngala has come into international prominence with her interpretation of her Dreaming, the Bush Plum (Arnwekety) and her figurative paintings of women's ceremonies.

Angeline Pwerle Ngala's career began in 1988 when she became part of the Utopian batik project and her work from this project is featured in the Robert Holmes á Court Collection. She began experimenting with acrylic paint on canvas in 1988-9 as part of the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association's project - The First works on Canvas, A Summer Project with the Utopia Aborignal women from Utopia. From this moment her output flourished.

Her paintings of her country and the bush plum can be viewed as landscapes. The changes in the depth and intensity of her dot-work produce a multi-dimensional textured surface.
