It is an important plant to the Alyawarre and Anmatyerr women as it was originated by an ancestral being who travelled through their country creating the plant. The women perform ceremonies with totems, dancing and singing to sustain and honour the plant each summer. The flowers contain thick, honey-like nectar which can be sucked directly from the flowers and they soak the flowers in water to make a sweet cordial-like drink.
The women’s ceremonies are focal points in the life of the community and are integral to the happiness and well being of the people. They gather together and sing and dance led by the most senior women of the clan group. It is at these ceremonial gatherings that the women, especially the younger ones, are taught the tribal dreamings or rules of life by the senior women.

Sandra Pitjara Jones' stories: Tharrkarr (Honey Grevillea), Irreyakwerre (Bush Onion), Ntyeny Ngkwarl (Red Mallee Flower). Sandra Pitjara Jones is an emerging artist from the Utopia region 270kms north east of Alice Springs.
Taught by her mother and aunties, she paints her dreamings – stories passed on down through the generations in her family. Many of Sandra's works depict Tharrkarr, the flower of the bush honey grevillea plant which grows profusely in her country. Her works are characterised by her fine brush work.
