In Incense, Ukrainian artist Igor Galan presents a commanding, emotionally charged portrait of a woman whose face emerges like a vision from swirling currents of colour and memory. Created in 2017, this large-format oil painting (220 x 195 cm) evokes the ritualistic atmosphere suggested by its title. Just as incense smoke slowly shifts, revealing and obscuring in equal measure, so too does the woman's face materialize from Galan's abstract forms – at once vivid and elusive, personal and symbolic.
The eyes are the emotional anchor of the composition. They are exquisitely detailed, intimate, and unflinching, confronting the viewer with a raw psychological presence. Yet, the rest of her features dissolve into dynamic fields of blue, crimson, and coral – like thoughts breaking apart, or feelings diffusing into air. Igor Galan (b. 1964, Lviv, Ukraine) is a master of painting and graphic arts, known for his ability to seamlessly blend classical techniques with contemporary themes. A graduate of the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, Galan has exhibited internationally, including in Berlin, Chicago, and Kyiv. His notable works, such as the 4-meter satirical painting “Gorbachev and His 15 Republics," showcase his talent for political commentary and visual storytelling. Held in prestigious collections, including the National Art Museum of Ukraine and Berlin's Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, Galan's art reflects his mastery of both technical skill and conceptual depth. Currently, he splits his time between Kyiv, Nice, and Paris, continuing to push boundaries in his creative practice.
