The oil painting on Cardboard titled "Not Far from the Lake" captures the quiet beauty of a summer landscape, where the warmth of the sun gently bathes the rolling meadows and the air is filled with the soft rustle of leaves. The artist has used a vibrant palette, with shades of green dominating the foreground, blending seamlessly with the deeper, cooler tones of the distant trees. In the foreground, the grasses are painted with thick, textured strokes, capturing the wild, untamed nature of the meadow. The rich greens are highlighted with touches of yellow and lime, creating a sense of life and movement as the blades of grass sway in the gentle breeze. The thick application of paint gives the scene a tactile quality, inviting the viewer to imagine the sensation of walking barefoot through the warm, sunlit grass. As the eye moves further into the scene, the landscape opens up to reveal a small cluster of trees, their dark trunks and dense foliage providing a natural frame to the view beyond. These trees, painted with a mix of deep greens and earthy browns, stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time, their branches reaching up towards the soft blue of the summer sky. The middle ground is characterized by the gentle rise and fall of the landscape, where the grasses give way to a more open, sunlit field. The artist has skillfully captured the way sunlight plays across the terrain, creating patches of bright yellow and warm orange where the sun breaks through the leaves above. In the distance, a hint of the lake itself can be seen, its surface shimmering with the reflections of the sky above. The water is painted in cool, tranquil tones of blue and violet, providing a calming contrast to the warm colors of the foreground. This glimpse of the lake hints at the refreshing coolness of the water, a welcome respite from the heat of the summer sun. Above, the sky is a soft, expansive field of pastel blues and gentle whites, with wisps of clouds drifting lazily across the horizon. These soft, airy tones add a sense of lightness to the composition, balancing the denser, more textured elements of the foreground. The overall effect is one of peace and tranquility, a celebration of the simple beauty of nature. The artist has captured a moment in time, a quiet afternoon not far from the lake, where the world feels expansive and full of promise. This painting invites the viewer to take a moment, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate the gentle rhythm of the natural world.

Boris Serdyuk, Not Far from the Lake
Ukraine  • 1960

Presentation

Born in 1960 in Konotop, Sumy Region, Ukraine.

1984 - Graduated from Yuriev-Polsky Pedagogical School (Department of Art and Graphics).

Worked as a drawing and drafting teacher, painting and wood carving instructor, artist-designer.

Held the position of Chief Artist in Konotop.

Since 2000 - Independent artist.

Member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.

Works by Boris Serdyuk are held in museums in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions, as well as in private collections in Ukraine, European countries, the USA, Israel, and other countries.

In 2018, the artist entered the global art space of the creative platform in New York, where seven of his works were included in the catalog "Painting & Graphics."

Currently lives and works in Kremenchuk, Poltava Region.

Took his first steps in the world of visual arts within the walls of his local school, then studied at Yuriev-Polsky Pedagogical School. After graduation, he returned to his homeland and started working as a drawing and painting teacher.

Later, he realized that for an artist, creative freedom is essential. Thus, after seventeen years of teaching, he left the profession to focus on his creative work. The artist is content to have the opportunity to engage in his beloved craft, which he considers the meaning of his life.

His journey had its ups and downs, victories in competitions, and recognition from admirers, yet he never ceased his determined quest for his artistic path. In ancient times, "serdyuk" referred to professional infantrymen in the Cossack ranks. This heritage likely passed down not only the surname but also many Cossack traits to the artist, including hard work, modesty, and human dignity.

Boris Serdyuk creates in genres such as portrait, landscape, and thematic composition. His works are varied, reflecting the artist's impressions of the places he visited. Among them are picturesque corners of Kremenchuk and Dnipro views, urban and maritime landscapes, the grandeur of the Carpathian Mountains, and cozy Ukrainian villages. His canvases are intriguing in terms of color and relatively compositionally perfect, revealing the life of nature at the time of their execution.

There are also commissioned portraits and paintings, such as "Shevchenko in Baturyn." He spent over a year working on it, studying the architecture of the former hetman capital. However, the artist prefers to work swiftly, capturing the vision of a painting before it fades from his mind and before the sun changes its angle and shadows. On average, according to the artist, he spends about 40 minutes on a single landscape.

Boris successfully combines a poetic perception of the world and a deep understanding of nature with brilliant artistic execution. His paintings exude a special light and a delicate sense of nature – vivid colors on the canvas resonate with intermediate tones. The artist has abandoned contours, replacing them with separate and contrasting brushstrokes; his paintings amaze with colors, not only their diversity but also the amount of substance applied to the canvas – vibrant, vivid, voluminous.

Describing the master's works is a challenging task. Boris Serdyuk's works are special – they are painted with soul. One must see and feel the wonderful harmony of nature on the artist's canvases firsthand and touch the great mystery of Art.
