C'est une sculpture en marbre de Gian Lorenzo Bernini, qui représente la transverbération de Thérèse d'Avila. L'œuvre constitue le groupe central compris dans l'écrin de la Chapelle Cornaro de Santa Maria Della Vittoria à Rome.
Dans la chapelle funéraire du cardinal Cornaro, Bernini représente Sainte Thérèse d’Avila en proie à une de ses célèbres visions. Un ange la transportait dans le ciel et lui transperçait le cœur avec une flèche enflammée. Quand il la retirait, écrit la sainte, c’était comme si on lui arrachait les entrailles. Mais au même temps elle était envahie par un grand amour de dieu.
La position du corps, l’expression du visage, ont amené la psychanalyse moderne à y voir une forme « d’hystéro-érotisme ». Mais Le Bernin a représenté en marbre un écrit de la sainte, qui décrit la longue lance d’or lui pénétrant le cœur et qui, retirée, lui cause une douleur excessive, l’amenant à Dieu. ?Certains critiques modernes expliquent les expériences religieuses proches de la syncope comme des phénomènes psychologiques qui relèvent de l'orgasme plutôt que comme des phénomènes spirituels.
