The Intervallum Series deepens the artist’s inquiry into what happens inside the space of a pause, in-between the polarity of light and darkness, a conversation within, and in-between the color fields, the echo pulsating through space of a painting, vibrating throughout like some hidden music.

The horizontal gesture naturally emerges out of color in Karpowicz’s paintings. Growing up in the farmlands of Poland forever instilled a sense of awe at the endlessness of the sky and earth, stretching into infinity, divided or connected by the thin lines of the ever changing horizons. Her work unfailingly continues to reflect this momentum. She remains keenly observant of every land she explores.

Certainty emerges as facticity in her paintings, embodied and supported by the use of raw and unprocessed materials. Karpowicz creates her paints in studio from fine, Earth powdered pigments mixed with walnut oil. These handmade colors are applied to the natural tone of linen canvas.

Karpowicz says, “Mixing powdered pigments is an alchemical process of creating just the right tone and feeling for the color, while allowing explorations and surprises. It is both a scientific and intuitive process.” The brushes used are simple, awkward, bristling and imperfect. These materials help her to ground her ideas in earthy concreteness. Thoughts and sensibilities which seem to move fast in the mind, and tend to escape notice, have a chance to slow down, making their mark, becoming visible.

Artist Statement

"The abstract nature of my paintings is based in my desire to simplify what is perceivable, to leave only what is essential, believing that there is an archetypal ground where we all meet in our human experience."

At a young age, Gosha was compelled to leave her home country of Poland, then part of the Communist bloc, to live and paint in the United States, where freedom of expression was encouraged and respected. She graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1985 in New York City. Gosha exhibited at Hopper House in Nyack, Equity Gallery, The Painting Center, and Anthroposophical Society in NYC , Korekta Gallery in Warsaw Poland, Museum of Contemporary Art in Radom, Poland, amongst many. Gosha Karpowicz was a recipient of Margo - Gelb residency in Cape Cod in 2023. Her most recent group shows were at Lichtundfire Gallery in New York City and Pinkwater Gallery in Kingston NY. Her paintings can be found in private collections in the United States, Italy, Poland, Germany, and are in the permanent collection in The Museum of Contemporary Art Elekrownia in Poland.

Gosha grew up observing changes of light and color in the forests, meadows, sky and the sea in the land of Poland. Her father was a professor of agriculture and her mother was an art and art history teacher. Gosha first came to painting as a biologist, a scientist, observing nature. She was fascinated by growth and decay, life and death, wanting to understand when things began, how they changed, why they ended. She surrendered to books and microscopes in her teenage years, until one day in the meadows she was so moved by the cool reds and the warm reds that she felt compelled to paint. It was the only way she felt she could understand what was in front of her. The study of nature and later abstract expression, became the experiential science she was seeking.
