Portrait of Aleksander Skarsgard, 2015 by Hunter & Gatti. Acrylic and oil print on pigment. Image Size: 19.5" H x 14.5" W. Frame Size: 29 in. H x 25 in. W x 2 in. D, Signed on the front and signed on the back with the date. White wooden frame. Black and white photography. Intervened by the artist
Hunter & Gatti wanted to pay homage to the legacy of neo-expressionist Jane-Michel Basquiat by merging celebrity portraits they had taken in the past for editorials and fashion campaigns, featuring the most iconoclasts of today's fashion scene, with Basquiat's paintings transcending the boundaries of the art world and becoming part of our collective unconscious - just like the famous faces in their photos. Their idea was to create a series of original hybrids that explore the boundaries of popular culture, while at the same time reflecting fashion's ongoing interest in the art world.
This striking artwork combines photography and abstract expressionism, creating a dynamic fusion of realism and abstraction. The central focus is a monochromatic portrait that captures an intense gaze, exuding deep emotion. Bold, sweeping strokes of golden and white paint overlay the photograph, introducing a sense of chaos and intensity. These expressive brushstrokes disrupt the serene black-and-white palette, adding texture and movement. The juxtaposition of the detailed facial features with the energetic splatters and smears draws viewers into a dialogue between calm observation and frenetic expression. This piece uniquely challenges traditional portraiture by blending meticulous photographic detail with the free-form spontaneity of paint, making it a compelling exploration of identity and emotion. The overall composition invites contemplation of the interplay between order and disorder, offering a vivid, thought-provoking visual experience.
