Presentation
Mick Rock, nicknamed "the man who photographed the 1970s", is an iconic British photographer, born in 1948 in London. A graduate in modern languages from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University, he discovered his passion for photography by chance when he borrowed a friend's camera to capture the image of a beautiful young woman. This experience awakened in him a lasting curiosity for the art of photography.
His career took off when he was asked by his friend Syd Barrett, a founding member of Pink Floyd, to take pictures. This opportunity led him to collaborate with iconic rock figures, including David Bowie, for whom he became the official photographer during the Ziggy Stardust era. Mick Rock also created iconic album covers, such as Lou Reed's Transformer, Iggy and the Stooges' Raw Power, and Queen II by Queen. At the same time, he directed several music videos for Bowie, including "John, I'm Only Dancing" and "Life on Mars?".
In 1974, an invitation from Lou Reed prompted him to move to New York, where he continued to photograph influential artists such as Debbie Harry, the Ramones, Joan Jett and Talking Heads. His unique approach and privileged access to musicians allowed him to capture intimate and authentic moments, helping to shape the visual aesthetic of rock.
Throughout his career, Mick Rock designed over 100 album covers and published 20 books dedicated to his work. His photographs have been exhibited worldwide and are included in prestigious collections, demonstrating his lasting impact on music photography. He passed away on November 18, 2021 in New York City, leaving behind an invaluable visual legacy that continues to influence and inspire the world of music and art.
