The works in this series are part of the permanent collection of the Fralin Museum of Art (United States).

My 2011 series on Disney Princesses features six Disney Princesses immersed in the world of work. Watching the Disney Princess films, I noticed that, although Disney has made efforts to modernize these stories, the original films remain as popular as ever. I'm interested in how gender stereotypes are imprinted on our minds from a young age through films, television, advertising, and popular culture.

These meticulously constructed and detailed images resemble film stills; their visual impact is amplified by the stark contrast between the iconic costumes and contemporary settings. By depicting princesses performing work outside of traditional domestic spaces, my aim is to confront harmful patriarchal representations of femininity, which continue to be reinforced and commercialized.

In much of my work, I seek to challenge perceptions of gender, particularly the idea that 'men are from Mars and women are from Venus.' This perception implies that the personalities and abilities of men and women are biologically determined by their gender, conveniently placing men at the top of the hierarchy, particularly in terms of money and positions of power.

My point is that we are the same and that we learn to be "male" or "female" from birth, through everything around us: television, advertising, popular culture, and the way the world perceives and treats us. And the cycle repeats itself.

Sarah Maple, Judge Jasmin
United Kingdom  • 1985

Presentation

Sarah Maple was born in 1985.

Sarah Maple grew up in the English countryside, with a Muslim mother and a Christian father; this dual heritage shaped her life and her artistic practice.

Sarah's work is centered on two main themes: women who assert themselves and Islam. Her approach is always provocative and she plays various roles in order to find the perfect positioning. In one of her works, she portraits herself praying while wearing bunny ears.

In 2007, Sarah won the "4 New Sensations" prize, supported by the famous art dealer and collector Charles Saatchi. The prize intends to distinguish the most imaginative and talented art students in the United Kingdom. Since then, the work of Sarah Maple has been shown New York, Canada, Israel and across Europe.

Sarah describes herself as "an artist, a feminist, and an activist". She takes inspiration from the problems she was confronted by while growing up as a Muslim in the South of England, her work questions gender issues, sexuality and religion, always being provocative and with a lot of humor!

Her work is the result of a young Muslim woman's search for her own identity while living in a diverse environment, with few other Muslims around her, except from her family members. She confronts serious and complex issues, from a fun perspective and in a joyful tone.
