Alec Andon, better known by his alias Alec Monopoly, is a renowned street artist from New York City. He gained widespread recognition for appropriating the iconic Monopoly mascot, Rich Uncle Pennybags, also known as Mr. Monopoly, as the central figure in his artwork. Alec Monopoly uses this character to explore and critique capitalist hierarchies through his works, often featuring elements of consumer culture, media, and pop iconography, drawing parallels with fellow street artist Banksy.
Currently residing in Los Angeles, Alec Monopoly has gained global attention for his thought-provoking and visually captivating street art that challenges the status quo. His works often feature large wall murals, tableaux, and hand-finished pieces, creating unique monopoly editions that reflect his sharp critique of the modern world. Known for his colorful and playful aesthetic, Monopoly also explores themes related to wealth, power, and the impact of money on society.
Although Alec Monopoly's identity remains elusive, it is widely believed that he was born in 1986 in New York to a family of painters. He finds the democratic nature of graffiti appealing, stating, "Painting on walls is more fun for me because everyone can enjoy it, not just collectors or art lovers." This mindset underscores his commitment to making art accessible to all, not just a select few.
His art draws from a variety of influences, including surrealist master Salvador Dalí, and influential pop artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The incorporation of spaceman Richie and ice cream Richie into his works also reflects his fascination with pop culture and the playful tone that has become synonymous with his style.
In addition to his iconic Monopoly man imagery, Alec Monopoly has also created highly sought-after limited editions, which often feature exclusive pieces such as snow day and Aspen snow artworks. His creations have sold for USD amounts in major galleries across the world, further cementing his place in the contemporary art scene.
With a growing fanbase in France, Los Angeles, and beyond, Alec Monopoly continues to be a prominent figure in both pop art and street art communities. Whether through tableaux, toile, or hand-finished pieces, his work pushes boundaries and challenges societal norms. From his playful renditions of Rich Uncle Pennybags to his spaceman and money-inspired creations, Monopoly's art remains a powerful commentary on capitalism and consumerism.
In 2024 and 2025, the artist continued to make waves in the art world with his innovative works and projects. In 2024, he launched a highly anticipated NFT collection, exploring themes of finance and capitalism, further establishing his presence in the digital art space. That same year, he also unveiled the Bullet Time photography exhibition at The Eden Gallery, showcasing dynamic images that complemented his signature street art style. In 2025, Monopoly revealed a new mixed-media painting, "Monopoly Green German Luxury Car", continuing his exploration of luxury and consumerism. Despite his success, he faced a personal setback when a rare £1 million Jacob and Co watch, custom-made in collaboration with Monopoly, was stolen from his Ibiza villa in July 2024. This theft, involving a limited edition watch featuring Monopoly Man and Scrooge McDuck, sparked an investigation by art recovery experts and authorities. Throughout these events, Alec Monopoly remains a dominant figure in street art, pop culture, and the world of luxury art, constantly pushing boundaries with his creative works.
