Ada Portfolio is a series of ten screenprints by American artist Alex Katz, all of which depict his muse and wife Ada Katz, née de Moro. Alex Katz is the most remarkable painter of modern life. For more than sixty years, he has defined the American pictorial vocabulary, and his work is both timeless and rooted in time.

Alex Katz's deep relationship with his wife and muse Ada is beautifully documented in the more than two thousand portraits he has created since they met in 1957 and married just three months later. His portraits of Ada are always imbued with a certain degree of idealization and generalization, her striking personality defined by a unique aesthetic that can be described as both serene and introspective.
For an exhibition at the Gladstone Gallery in Brussels in 2022, Katz looked back at his past and took works from across his oeuvre. The new paintings are truncated copies of iconic old portraits dating from 1957 to 2008 depicting his wife Ada. In works like Ada 8, a cut-out version of the 1989 work Ada in Red, props and ornaments were removed, leaving the naked human face floating outside of time and context. By reworking portraits of his past, Katz in turn reflects the present. Thanks to the luminous color palette, graphic sensitivity and cinematic design of the different compositions, the exhibited works underline the indestructibility and originality of the artist. It is precisely from this series that the present portfolio of screen prints comes, which can certainly be described as unique.
Katz painted his wife Ada, who is the subject of countless drawings and prints, hundreds of times over the years. Recognizable by her dark brown hair, large dark eyes and full lips, Ada is close yet remains distant, withdrawn and inscrutable. Considering these works together, we see an unexpected range of emotion and complexity in Katz's depiction of Ada Due to the time gap between the original portraits, the artist hides Ada's identity in the flat yet bold simplicity of the painting, she could be many different people.
Having studied Ada's face for decades, Katz knows all too well the curves of her cheeks, the unique slope of her nose, and the seductive shapes of her eyes - and yet, he never tires of seeing her beloved Ada in a new and unique way. The devotion between Katz and his beloved wife is incredibly evident - proof that love is indeed timeless and is now forever immortalized in Katz's artwork. Katz leaves the viewer with the haunting impression that he has repeatedly fallen in love with Ada - a true romance for eternity.
ALEX KATZ was born in 1927 in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, and raised in St. Albans, Queens, where his family moved in 1928, just before the start of the Depression. His earliest aesthetic influences came from his parents, who met in Russia during World War I and ended up in New York. Her mother Sima was an actress, a star of Lower East Side Yiddish theater, who performed under the stage name Ella Marion. She was "very literary," says Katz - she learned English using a dictionary and a collection of Edgar Allan Poe, whose poems she also had her four-year-old son recite - and had a caustic sense of humor. In his memoir, Katz recounts how he once said to her as he was leaving a hotel lobby, "It was awfully nice talking to you," to which she replied, "I hope you don't Don’t paint in clichés.”
A precursor of pop art, he always focused on the essential and was very early interested in simplified shapes and the composition of contrasting colors. His art is varied, but it always has beauty as its central theme. The artist has to his credit more than 200 solo exhibitions and around 500 group exhibitions; his varied works are part of more than 100 collections worldwide. Alex Katz lives and works in New York and Maine.

Alex Katz was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1927 from Russian parents. In 1946, Katz entered The Cooper Union Art School in Manhattan, a prestigious college of art, architecture, and engineering.
Alex Katz is a figurative artist. He is known for paintings, sculptures and prints and is represented by numerous galleries internationally. His paintings are divided almost equally into the genres of portraiture and landscape.
Katz's first one-person show was held at the Roko Gallery in 1954. Katz had begun to develop greater acquaintances with the New York School and their allies in the other arts. From 1955 to 1959, usually following a day of painting, Katz made small collages of figures in landscapes from hand-colored strips of delicately cut paper. In the late 1950s, he moved towards greater realism in his paintings. He embraced monochrome backgrounds, which would become a defining characteristic of his style, anticipating Pop Art and separating him from gestural figure painters and the New Perceptual Realism. In 1965, he also embarked on a prolific career in printmaking. Katz would go on to produce many editions in lithography, etching, silkscreen, woodcut and linoleum cut.
Alex Katz's work has been the subject of more than 200 solo exhibitions and nearly 500 group exhibitions internationally since 1951. Katz has received numerous accolades throughout his career. In 2007, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy Museum, New York. In 2005, Katz was the honored artist at the Chicago Humanities Festival's Inaugural Richard Gray Annual Visual Arts Series. The same year, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Colgate University, Hamilton, New York— his second Honorary Doctorate, following one from Colby College, Maine, in 1984.
Works by Alex Katz can be found in over 100 public collections worldwide. Most notably, those in America include: Albright-Knox Museum, Buffalo; The Art Institute of Chicago; The Brooklyn Museum; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Des Moines Art Center; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and many others.
