Artwork location: Brazil

With its clean symmetry and bold use of primary colors, this portrait exudes a sense of modernist clarity while retaining an undercurrent of mystery. The subject's face is deconstructed into vivid shapes, forming a jigsaw of expression that denies a single interpretation. The circles and triangles framing her features evoke celestial or mathematical symbolism, suggesting a connection between humanity and universal order. The confident, unblinking eyes emerge from the chaos of shapes, inviting the viewer to search for coherence in the abstraction.

The fragmentation of the human form in these artworks can be interpreted as a visual representation of identity's layered nature. Each geometric shape, color, and line represents a facet of the self, revealing how we are not monolithic but a collection of memories, perceptions, and emotions. These fractured compositions challenge the viewer to question what constitutes a whole—whether a person or an experience—and to grapple with the elusive nature of truth and authenticity.

The deliberate disruption of form speaks to a modern existential crisis: the tension between individuality and societal conformity. The intricate yet disjointed mosaics mirror the way individuals are often shaped—and fragmented—by external forces like cultural expectations, historical context, and the rapid pace of technological advancement. The repeated focus on eyes as a central motif reinforces themes of perception and introspection. Are we the observers of our reality, or are we constantly being observed, categorized, and defined?

The heavy influence of cubism is evident in the way the human form is broken into planes and facets, inviting viewers to reconstruct and interpret the subject from multiple angles simultaneously. The fragmented nature of the faces echoes the work of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, who sought to depict not only the physical appearance but also the essence and complexity of their subjects.

The surrealist undercurrent in these images emerges in the way recognizable features are distorted or reimagined. The seemingly misplaced fragments, exaggerated eyes, and geometric overlays evoke the dreamlike quality of Salvador Dalí or René Magritte, where reality bends to reveal hidden truths.

Rooted in the modernist rejection of traditional representation, these works emphasize abstraction and innovation. The bold use of primary colors, combined with a clear awareness of composition and symmetry, reflects modernist ideals of simplicity and functionality, reminiscent of artists like Piet Mondrian and Bauhaus principles.

These works pose an essential question about identity: Are we more than the sum of our parts? The fragmented faces seem to suggest that our identities are multifaceted, ever-shifting mosaics influenced by time, culture, and personal introspection. Each shard can symbolize a different role we play in life or the varying ways we are perceived by others.

The use of abstract geometry and vibrant colors reflects the influence of modernity on perception. Just as the modern world is fragmented by technology, media, and information overload, these artworks highlight how contemporary life reshapes our understanding of the self. The overlapping shapes may signify the blurred lines between the physical, digital, and emotional realms.

While these paintings are steeped in the traditions of cubism and surrealism, they also forge a path of innovation by blending human emotion with cold abstraction. They serve as a bridge between the past and the present, paying homage to foundational art movements while addressing contemporary concerns of identity, alienation, and interconnectedness.

Presentation

Sephora Venites is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans performance, video, painting, photography, and technology.

Her multifaceted approach merges technical precision with intuitive experimentation, crafting visual narratives that transcend aesthetic and conceptual boundaries.

Beyond her work in the visual arts, Sephora is a dedicated actress, bringing a broad perspective to her roles in film and television. Her credits include the independent feature Liquid Love (2018) by Vitor Steinberg, inspired by Zygmunt Bauman's writings; Matthew John's contemporary adaptation of Hedda Gabler ; Andrew Arthur's romantic comedy Love at First Swipe; and the acclaimed series Mr. Selfridge (2013).

A graduate of Barcelona's Institut Català de la Moda in costume design and editing, Sephora applies her expertise in visual storytelling to push the boundaries of art and identity. In collaboration with photographers such as Paul Winstone, Nick Delaney, and Jonas Tucci, she developed a fine art photography series paying tribute to Frida Kahlo, reinterpreting her iconic aesthetic through a contemporary lens.

Her work masterfully bridges traditional and contemporary media, creating art that is both timeless and cutting-edge. Inspired by movements like Dadaism, Sephora's projects explore philosophical themes through vivid visual metaphors, questioning the nature of art itself.

With a bold and visceral style that echoes her Brazilian roots and the lush landscapes of her childhood, Sephora reinvents imagery and narrative within the digital age, challenging the concept of authenticity in a "copy-paste" culture.
